Stoney Creek has been part of the City of Hamilton since 2001, and Protech Garage Doors covers it from the Mississauga branch: garage door openers, new overhead doors, and repair second, with the van coming down the QEW to the Centennial Parkway and Fruitland Road exits, about 60 km by road. There is no Stoney Creek shop. What makes the work here its own is that the lower city, the mountain and the QEW's industrial strip were each built in a different decade, and the doors show it. Orchards, then houses, then the mountain
Stoney Creek was fruit country before it was anything else. E.D. Smith started making jam out of leftover fruit at Winona in 1882 and opened his first jam factory there in 1904, and the company ran Winona's economy from 1890 to 1980. Saltfleet Township became the Town of Stoney Creek in 1974 and a city in 1984, and on 2001-01-01 it went into the new City of Hamilton. The City's Census tables count 57,330 people in 2001 and 76,480 in 2021, and the dwelling count went from 19,710 to 27,560 in those twenty years: 7,850 new garage doors, give or take, most of them on the mountain and out toward Winona.
The building came in two waves. The lower city, between the escarpment and the lake, filled in through the 1970s and 1980s. The west mountain came in the 1990s and 2000s, and Winona, which had 14,076 people in 2021, is the newest end, along with Fifty Point, where the conservation area has a marina and a campground on the lake.
Two eras, two jobs
A 1970s lower-city house below the escarpment has an attached single or double on its second or third opener, and often the original door. That is an opener replacement first, and a door replacement when the 1970s steel has nothing in it and the garage shares a wall with the house. A 2005 house on the mountain or in Winona is on its builder opener and its first set of springs, and the calls from those streets are a door that has got heavy over a season and an opener straining against it. Protech fits LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers, belt drive where a bedroom is over the garage, and doors from Garaga, Amarr and Stanley, with the Build Your Door designer for choosing the look before ordering.
Overhead doors on the QEW strip
South Service Road between Centennial Parkway and Fruitland Road is Stoney Creek's industrial front, and its buildings are built around their doors: a typical unit on that road has four truck-level doors and 16.5 feet of clear height inside. Those are commercial overhead doors with commercial openers, cycling all day, and a dock door that has started to hesitate on the way up is a cheaper booking than one that has stopped with a trailer at it. Protech services and replaces commercial doors and commercial openers along that strip and around the E.D. Smith plant's end of Winona.
Getting a van to Stoney Creek
From Bonhill Road it is the QEW over the Skyway and along the lake, about 60 km to the old town, and the Centennial Parkway or Fruitland Road exits for the lower city. For the mountain the van takes the Red Hill Valley Parkway, open since 2007, and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway. Repairs are booked same day, and the window is longer for Winona than for the old town because Winona is further east on the same run. Give the street and say lower or upper when you book. A door off its track should not be run until someone arrives; the page behind that link says why.
Permits: it is the City of Hamilton
Since 2001 the permit office for Stoney Creek is the City of Hamilton. Its rule is a building permit for a detached accessory building over 15 square metres and for an attached garage at any size, because an attached garage is an addition. A replacement door in the same opening is not on that list. Widening an opening or building a new detached garage on a Winona lot is, and the City's building division answers for the specific address.
Repair or replace
A 1978 lower-city single with a stripped opener gear is a repair, and a small one. The same door with its bottom panel rusted through from fifty winters of salt off the driveway is a replacement, and putting a new spring on it first is money spent on a door that is leaving. A 2008 Winona double that has got heavy is a spring and cable change, and it is worth having the opener checked on the same visit because it has been lifting an unbalanced door for a season. Protech does not quote a price online. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.

Should I say lower or upper when I book?
Yes, and it changes the route as much as the job. The van comes over the Skyway and along the lake for the lower city, taking the Centennial Parkway or Fruitland Road exits, and goes up the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway for the mountain. Winona gets a longer window than the old town because it is further east on the same run.
What is a typical industrial unit on the South Service Road?
Four truck-level doors and 16.5 feet of clear height inside, which is what the buildings between Centennial Parkway and Fruitland Road are built around. Those are commercial overhead doors on commercial openers cycling all day, so the useful thing to send is the bay count and the door sizes, not the symptom on its own.
A 2008 Winona double has got heavy. What is that?
A spring and cable change, and it is worth having the opener checked on the same visit because it has spent a season lifting an unbalanced door. That is the mountain and Winona pattern: builder opener, first set of springs. Below the escarpment the 1970s houses are the opposite case, on a second or third opener with the original door still up.
