Where the 410 runs out

Highway 410 leaves the 401 in Mississauga, runs 20.3 km north, and ends at Highway 10 in Caledon; that last stretch beyond Bovaird Drive opened on 16 November 2009. From there it is Highway 10 to Orangeville, where it becomes Hurontario Street and meets Broadway, the old Highway 9, in the middle of town. The whole trip from 1495 Bonhill Rd #14 is about 50 km. Repairs are booked same day, and at 50 km that means a longer window than a Mississauga street gets, so give the street and the door type when you send the form and say what the door is doing. A door that will not open with a car behind it and a door that will not close on an empty garage are different calls, and the second one can wait for the van that is already headed up Highway 10.

A mill town that doubled in the 1970s

Orange Lawrence built his mill here in 1844. The village was incorporated in December 1863 and became a town on 1 January 1874, and it has been the county seat since. It grew slowly for a century, then jumped: 8,074 people in 1971, 13,740 in 1981, 30,167 in 2021. The 2021 Census counts 11,060 occupied private dwellings, and 3,195 of them, the largest single band, were built between 1961 and 1980. Another 1,415 date from 1960 or before, and those are the streets around Broadway, with garages added later on lots laid out for horses.

That 1970s stock is where the calls come from. A door of that age is on its second or third replacement, and the opener above it is the part that has run out. Headwaters

The Credit River rises above the Niagara Escarpment near Orangeville, and Credit Valley Conservation runs the Island Lake Conservation Area on the town's edge. Orangeville sits above the escarpment, which is a plain way of saying the winter that reaches a garage here is not Mississauga's winter. Orangeville is in Dufferin County, not Peel Region, and its area code is 519, not 905. The permit office is the Town's own building division at Town Hall on Broadway, and the Town's page lists a new entrance or a new window opening, any addition regardless of size, and an attached or detached garage as work that needs a building permit. It says nothing either way about replacing a door in the same opening, so for a like-for-like replacement ask the Town for that address; for a wider opening the answer is a permit.

That day Council passed the by-law designating the York Street Heritage Conservation District. A new garage is to complement the house, with the garage door named alongside roof form, pitch and materials, and an attached garage facing the street is permitted only if it is recessed from the front wall or sits at the back of the house.
