Bramalea's lettered streets

Bramalea was Canada's first satellite city, laid out from the 1960s by Bramalea Consolidated Developments on the farms of Chinguacousy Township, section by section in alphabetical order from A, with the later sections south of Bovaird Drive reaching M, N and P. The G and H sections were the province's Home Ownership Made Easy project and put the houses on the lot line to save land. Bramalea City Centre went up from the late 1960s, and on 1 January 1974 Chinguacousy, Toronto Gore and the old Town of Brampton merged into the city that exists now. Brampton had 41,211 people in 1971 and 149,030 in 1981.

The 2021 Census counts 35,165 occupied dwellings in Brampton built between 1961 and 1980, and Bramalea is most of them. Those garages are on their second or third door and the opener is the question. Springdale, Mount Pleasant and the northwest

Springdale started in 1991 and the city kept building north to Mayfield Road, which Peel held as the urban boundary until 2021. Brampton's share of that is the truck terminals, the cross-docks and the warehouses around the 410, the 407 and Steeles Avenue, the Brampton Assembly plant that American Motors opened in 1960, and the CN intermodal terminal. Every one of those buildings runs commercial overhead doors and dock doors that cycle all day and stand open in January.

So: a wider opening is a permit, and for a like-for-like replacement ask the City's Building Division for that address before the door is ordered.

There is no Brampton address; the branch that serves Brampton is the Mississauga one, and it is close. Repairs are booked same day. Give the street: Bramalea's lettered sections and Mount Pleasant are at opposite corners of a city of 656,480 people, and the 410 at five o'clock is the difference.

Repair or replace, in Brampton's terms

A 1968 Bramalea single with a rusted bottom section and an opener that strips its gear every other winter is a new insulated door and a new opener in one visit. A 2012 Springdale double with a broken spring is a spring. A dock door with a bent bottom section from a trailer is a section if the make is in production and a door if it is not. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.
