What 120 km means

Repairs are booked same day, and at this distance the same day is a longer window than it is in Oakville, because the van is at the end of the run rather than the start. No arrival time is promised. What helps is the street and the district, because the old north end, the tourist strip and Chippawa are different exits and different doors. Two pages are worth reading before sending the form: a door that has come off its track must not be run at all until someone is there, and the stuck-door checklist rules out a knocked sensor or a locked slide before a van drives 120 km to press a button.

Openers and new doors are the better booking

For an opener or a new overhead door the distance stops mattering, because the visit is planned and the parts come with it. The north end and the 1963 annexation

The City of Niagara Falls dates from 1904, when the town and the village merged; it took in Stamford Township in 1963 and Chippawa, Willoughby Township and part of Crowland in 1970, and the population jumped 200 per cent in the 1971 Census as a result. The 2021 Census counts 37,790 occupied dwellings for 94,415 people: 11,695 built in 1960 or before and 11,290 from 1961 to 1980, six in ten between them, with 2,600 built from 2016 to 2021, more than in any five-year band since 1980. Two thirds are single-detached. Those north-end streets, the Stamford side, are the pre-1980 doors, the ones whose openers are the age of the people who bought the houses.

Hotels, parking decks and the strip

Industry left in the 1970s and 1980s and tourism became the city's main revenue source. Casino Niagara set off the late-1990s hotel boom and Niagara Fallsview opened in 2004. What that leaves for a door company is hotel loading docks, parking-structure doors that cycle from check-in to check-out, and the older industrial buildings the electro-chemical plants left behind when cheap power stopped being reason enough to stay. The power plants, and what they have to do with doors

Sir Adam Beck 1 first produced power in 1922, Beck 2 in 1954, and the Niagara Tunnel went into service on 2013-03-21. The Toronto Power station ran from 1906 to 1974-02-15; the Ontario Power station from 1905 to 1999, closed for the casino; the Rankine station of the Canadian Niagara Power Company opened 1905-01-02, stopped in 2005 and reopened in July 2021 as the Niagara Parks Power Station. Cheap power is why the electro-chemical and electro-metallurgical plants came in the first half of the last century, and their leaving in the 1970s and 1980s is why the older industrial stock here has doors from an era when nobody had heard of a photo-eye. Chippawa is its own grid. It was founded in 1850, about 2 km upstream of the Falls, and has been part of the city since 1970. The Welland River runs backwards through it, pulled by the intake that feeds the power canal to the reservoirs above Queenston. It is village stock on its own street grid south of the river, and a Chippawa booking should say Chippawa rather than "Niagara Falls", because it is a different exit and a different kind of garage from the strip.

Permits in Niagara Falls

The City of Niagara Falls does not require a building permit for a detached shed or garage of 15 square metres or less that is one storey, unattached and without plumbing, and treats an attached garage or carport as needing a permit at any size. Creating a new door opening or enlarging one needs a permit; replacing a door in the existing opening is not on the City's list. A 1965 Stamford door with a stripped opener gear is a repair.
