Bowmanville is in Clarington, and the address matters

Bowmanville became a town in 1858. In 1974 it was merged with Clarke and Darlington townships into the Town of Newcastle, which was renamed the Municipality of Clarington in 1994. The municipality had 101,427 people in 2021, up 10.2 per cent on 2016, across Bowmanville, Courtice, Newcastle, Orono and more than thirty rural communities. So write "Bowmanville" on the form and then the street. Courtice is a different run off the 401, Newcastle is further east again, and a concession road north of Taunton is a third thing.

No single decade built this town

Clarington has 35,955 occupied dwellings and 27,945 of them are single-detached houses, which is 78 per cent, against Whitby's 70, Ajax's 65 and Oshawa's 56. The construction dates spread out in a way no other Durham town matches: 4,495 from 1960 or before, 5,240 from the 1960s and 1970s, 6,195 from the 1980s, 6,750 from the 1990s, and between 3,155 and 3,520 in each five-year block since 2001. A Bowmanville call can be a 1920s house off King Street with a detached garage added later, a 1988 side-split with an attached single, or a 2019 double under two bedrooms, and each one is a different door on a different opener. Machine sheds and rural shops

North of the town the roads are concession roads and the buildings on them are farm buildings, hobby shops and contractor yards. Darlington Nuclear Generating Station's four units came into service between October 1990 and June 1993, and together they make 3,512 megawatts, about a fifth of Ontario's electricity. Ontario Power Generation started refurbishing all four on 14 October 2016, a $12.8 billion job that finished by March 2026, and broke ground on the small modular reactor next door on 2 December 2022, with construction under way since May 2025 and power expected in 2030. The plant employs more than 3,000 people and is Bowmanville's largest employer. The contractor shops, equipment yards and supply buildings that serve a site like that run overhead doors all day, and a door that stops on a Monday morning stops the work behind it.

Getting a van to Bowmanville

Bonhill Road to downtown Bowmanville is about 90 km by road, and 83 of them are on the 401, which was first built through Bowmanville in 1952. Highway 418 opened on 9 December 2019 and went toll-free on 5 April 2022, so the 407 and the 418 are the way around a stopped 401. There is no Bowmanville premises. This is the farthest page on the Mississauga run, and a same-day call here is the longest window that branch quotes.
