A village that became a suburb in twenty years

Jackson Stitt arrived from Donegal in 1818 and built a sawmill and a grist mill, and the settlement took its name from him when he became its first postmaster.

It was a stagecoach stop through the middle of the century, it was nearly wiped out by the Great Fire of 1870, and the Canadian Pacific Railway rebuilt it as a commercial village. It stayed a village until suburban Ottawa reached it late in the twentieth century.
