A village that became a suburb in twenty years

Jackson Stitt arrived from Donegal in 1818 and built a sawmill and a grist mill, and the settlement took its name from him when he became its first postmaster. It was a stagecoach stop through the middle of the century, it was nearly wiped out by the Great Fire of 1870, and the Canadian Pacific Railway rebuilt it as a commercial village. It stayed a village until suburban Ottawa reached it late in the twentieth century.

Then it filled in fast. Six per cent of Stittsville homes predate 1960 and twelve per cent went up between 1961 and 1980. Thirty per cent were built in the 1980s and thirty-six per cent in the 1990s, with fourteen per cent after 2001.

Two thirds of the district ages together

That split is the single most useful thing to know about garage doors here. Amberwood is the older pocket

Amberwood was built around the Amberwood Golf and Country Club and is the part of Stittsville where the 1970s stock sits. That is where extension springs on single-car doors still turn up, where a door may be wood rather than steel, and where an opener occasionally predates the safety sensors near the floor. Jackson Trails at the other end was built as an Energy Star community and its doors are a generation younger, insulated from the start, and heavier for it.

Wind off the fields

The western edge of Stittsville still runs out to open farmland, and a garage door facing that way takes weather a sheltered street does not. What shows first is the seal: the perimeter stop moulding down the sides and across the head goes hard and stops sealing, and a closed door starts whistling and drifting snow along the inside of the threshold. That is a strip of moulding and a bottom seal, not a door.
