Garage door repair in Athens

Two roads in, and the short one is about 95 km

From Nepean the shortest road to Athens never touches the 401: Roger Stevens Drive west, County Road 29 south through Toledo, then County Road 8 and Lake Eloida Road into the village. The other way is the 416 to the 401, west to Brockville, and up County Road 29 from the south. The county road is the shorter of the two and the quieter; the highway route is longer, and it is the one the van takes when it has a Brockville job the same day.

At that distance a same-day call is a commitment of the van to Leeds County for the day, not a promise of a time. Almost every door here belongs to the person who opens it

The 2021 census counted 3,042 people and 1,215 occupied dwellings in the Township of Athens. 1,100 of those homes are owner-occupied, 90 per cent, and 1,155 are single-detached houses, 95 per cent. Against Brockville, where 43 per cent of households rent, Athens is a place where the person calling about the door is the person who has lived with it, and who usually knows the week it started to drag.

The houses are old. 415 were built in 1960 or earlier and 325 between 1961 and 1980; about 125 have gone up since 2001. A house from before 1960 in Athens went up before the attached garage was normal, so its garage was added later, by whoever owned the place, to an opening of their choosing. That is the Athens call: a door of an odd width or a low height on a detached building, where the replacement is measured on site rather than picked off a chart. Farmersville, then Athens

The village was Farmersville until 1888, when the merchant Arza Parish had it renamed for the Greek centre of learning, because it held a grammar school, a model school for training teachers and a high school. The township as it stands was formed on 2001-01-01, when the Village of Athens and the Township of Rear of Yonge and Escott amalgamated. The murals came in the 1980s, nine of them by the end of that decade, painted on the sides of the village's buildings and showing the farms and the railway that built the place. Some have been repainted since as the walls weathered.

Charleston Lake, and the farms

Charleston Lake Provincial Park, 23.5 square kilometres on the granite of the Frontenac Axis, opened in 1972 and had 119,000 visitors in 2022; the lake and its cottages are a short drive south-west of the village. A cottage door out there is opened a few dozen times a year and sits through the winter unused. What the township says about permits

The Township of Athens exempts backyard, garden and storage sheds under 160 square feet from a building permit, and nothing else. Zoning setbacks apply even to those. A garage is a permit. A new door in an existing opening is not a new building; if the opening is changing, ask the township office on Main Street West before the door is ordered.

Repair or replace, on an Athens door

Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together. A spring pair on a 1990s attached double is a repair. A door on a 1950s detached garage whose wooden bottom rail has rotted where it meets the slab is a replacement, and a spring on it is money spent on a door that is leaving. Between the two sits the 1970s single-skin steel door on a garage that shares a wall with the kitchen, where an insulated replacement is a cheaper fix for a cold wall than anything done inside the kitchen.
