Garage door repair in Verona

Protech Garage Doors repairs garage doors and openers in Verona, on Road 38 at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, with a van from its shop at 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean. The shortest road is about 135 km, County Road 10 through Perth and the Westport Road to Road 38; Highway 7 to Sharbot Lake and down Road 38 is about 155 km. Neither passes Kingston. There is no Verona premises. The phone line is open 24 hours at (613) 845-9950.

135 km of county road, and what a same-day call means

Verona is reached from Ottawa by county roads rather than the 401: Franktown Road and County Road 10 to Perth, the Westport Road south-west through Westport, and the last 7 km down Road 38. About 135 km. Highway 7 to Sharbot Lake and 30 km south on Road 38 is the other way, longer at about 155 km. Both are two-lane roads the whole way, and no minutes are quoted for either.

A same-day call to Verona is a van committed to South Frontenac for the day and booked into a route; Protech says that on the phone rather than promising a time. The emergency call is taken. The work the distance suits is planned: a replacement door, a new opener, springs and cables together, the cottage door opened for the season. Two jobs on Road 38 the same day make the run; say if yours can wait for a second one.

The road that stopped being a highway

Road 38 was Ontario Highway 38 from 1934-04-25 to 1998-01-01, 66.9 km from the 401 in Kingston to Highway 7 at Sharbot Lake, through Harrowsmith, Verona, Godfrey, Parham and Tichborne. The Hartington to Verona diversion was built in 1938 and the road was paved between 1946 and 1953. In 1998 the province handed it to Frontenac County's municipalities, and South Frontenac calls its stretch Township Road 38. Everyone else still says Highway 38. It is the commute road to Kingston, and the houses along it belong to people who drive it twice a day.

The village was Buzztown before it was Verona, named for the sound of its saw and grist mills, and it grew on the Kingston and Pembroke Railway in the second half of the 1800s as the one crossing of the Cameron Bog, about 5,000 acres of it. No census unit draws a line around the village: Verona is counted inside the Township of South Frontenac, whose 20,188 residents in 2021 were up 8.3 per cent on 2016.

New houses on old roads

South Frontenac has built steadily. Of 7,935 occupied dwellings in 2021, 1,205 went up in the 1990s and 1,720 since 2001, 37 per cent of the stock in thirty years, and almost all of it single-detached. Around Verona that means a 2005 house on a rural lot off Road 38, on a builder's door and opener, with a detached workshop the owner put up later on a door of its own. The house door is reaching its first spring change. The workshop door was hung by whoever built the workshop, and how well is the first thing the visit finds out.

Older Verona is the 1,820 township houses from 1960 or before and the 2,065 from the two decades after, and a share of those are on the lakes: Rock Lake, Howes Lake, Eagle Lake, Bobs Lake and Desert Lake are all a short drive out. Residential doors and openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie cover both ends.

Frontenac Park, and the door that opens twice a year

Frontenac Provincial Park, 5,350 hectares of Shield granite and 22 lakes, established in 1974, is 20 km east of Verona, and its access road tells the cottage season: Salmon Lake Road is closed from late October to late April, and the park's Big Salmon Lake lot cannot be driven to in between. The cottages on the lakes around Verona keep the same calendar. Their garage and boathouse doors get opened hard in May, closed hard in October and left through six months of frost.

A door that has not moved since Thanksgiving is the usual May call: the opener runs and the door stays put, or it comes up crooked. The stuck door page walks the check order before anybody drives 135 km. Book the cottage door with the house door in one visit, in May or in October, and it is one run for the van rather than two.

Permits: the office is in Sydenham, not Verona

The Township of South Frontenac's building department is at 4432 George Street in Sydenham, 15 km away, and it takes forms by email, so nobody in Verona needs to drive there. The exemption is a storage shed of 15 square metres or less; a garage is a permit. A civic address for a new driveway on a public road needs an entrance permit first, which matters on a new-build lot off Road 38 more than it does in the village. A new door in an existing opening needs nothing.

Repair or replace, on Road 38

Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together. A spring pair on a 2005 attached double off Road 38 is a repair. A door on a 1950s detached garage with the bottom rail rotted through is a replacement. On a cottage the answer turns on use: a door opened forty times a year does not need an insulated replacement, it needs its springs and rollers looked at in May, and the money goes to the house door instead. Garaga, Amarr and Stanley supply the replacement; the design tool shows it on the building first.

Verona questions

Asked in Verona

Answered for Verona specifically, not for everywhere at once.

Can my job wait for a second one on the same road?

Say so if it can, because two jobs on Road 38 the same day are what make the run. Verona is reached by county roads rather than the 401, about 135 km through Perth and Westport or about 155 km by Highway 7 and Road 38, and both are two lanes the whole way. An emergency is still taken and booked into a route rather than promised an hour.

Should the cottage door and the house door be one visit?

Yes, wherever the two are close enough to pair. Cottages on the lakes around Verona keep the park calendar, opened hard in May, closed hard in October and left through six months of frost, so the May call is the same call every year: the opener runs and the door stays put, or it comes up crooked. Booking both together turns two 135 km trips into one.

The workshop door was hung by the person who built the workshop. Is that a problem?

It is the first thing the visit finds out. Around Verona the common shape is a 2005 house on a rural lot with a builder door reaching its first spring change, plus a detached workshop the owner put up later on a door of its own. The house door is predictable. The workshop door depends entirely on how it was hung, so describe it separately on the phone.
