Seventy-five kilometres, and the 416 ends here

This is the simplest run on the whole list. Prince of Wales Drive to Bankfield Road, onto Highway 416, and then 57 km without leaving it, because the 416 finishes at Highway 401 by Johnstown a few minutes east of the town. About 75 km by road, nearly all of it divided highway. No minutes are quoted here even so: the 416 shut in both directions on 2009-12-14 after a sixty to seventy vehicle pileup in fog and ice, and a free-flow figure describes none of that.

Repairs are booked same day, and at this distance that means a window inside a planned run rather than a van turned round on the spot. Say the street when you call, and say what the door is doing: a bang followed by a door that will not lift is a spring, a door hanging lower on one side is a cable, and an opener light blinking while the door refuses to close is the safety sensors. The town is smaller than it was in 1961

Prescott held 5,366 people in 1961 and 4,078 in 2021, a fall of roughly a quarter across sixty years. The housing follows. The 2021 Census counts 1,890 occupied private dwellings in the town, and 1,095 of them, fifty-eight in every hundred, were standing in 1960. Another 445 went up between 1961 and 1980. Only 150 date from 2001 or later, and 40 of those from 2016 onward.

So the story every suburb page tells, about one subdivision reaching its first spring failure together, has no subject in Prescott. The job that comes up instead is a retrofit: a modern sectional door going into an opening that was framed for a different era of car, on a house that has changed hands several times since. Whether it fits is a question about the jamb, the header and the side room. Jessup's town, the fort and the plant that left

Edward Jessup laid the town out in 1810 and named it for General Robert Prescott. Fort Wellington went up during the War of 1812 to stop American use of the river and was never attacked, then was reactivated in the rebellion years: in 1838 Hunter Patriots crossed here, were pushed back, and made their last stand at a stone windmill downriver. The town made its living transferring freight between Montreal and the Great Lakes, and the Bytown and Prescott Railway arrived in 1854. Later on, RCA assembled televisions here from 1953 until 1997.

That is the shape behind the census numbers. A town built for river freight and then for a factory, with the factory gone since 1997 and the population down with it, has a housing stock that has changed hands more often than it has been added to.

The bridge and the port are next door, not here

Two things get put in Prescott that are not in it. The Ogdensburg to Prescott international bridge, completed in 1960, 2.4 km long with a main span of 350 metres, lands on the Canadian side at Johnstown, a few kilometres east. The Port of Johnstown, which moves grain and bulk cargo, is owned and run by the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Both sit outside the Town of Prescott's boundary, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes a building at either address as a Prescott job.

What the Town asks before a building changes

The Town of Prescott requires a building permit to construct an accessory structure larger than 10 square metres, which it gives as 108 square feet, and it names a detached garage as its own first example. It also requires one to demolish or remove all or a portion of a building. Complete applications, the Town says, are processed within 60 days.

That sixty-day figure is the number to plan around in a town where most openings are old. Replacing a door in the opening it already has is not a demolition. Taking out a header, widening a masonry opening or pulling down a leaning frame garage to put up a new one is a different application with a clock attached, and the clock starts when the application is complete rather than when it is first handed in.

Repair or replace on a Prescott door

A cable set, a roller, a hinge or an opener gear kit is a small job and worth doing on any door with sound sections. A spring pair is bigger and still a fraction of a door. Replace when the bottom section has rusted through along the seam, when a wooden rail has gone soft where it sits on the slab, or when the panels have separated enough that the door no longer seals whatever is done to the weather strip.
