Garage door repair in Alexandria

About 100 km, and the last stretch is Highway 34

There is no Protech premises in Alexandria. The van takes Hunt Club to the 417, runs 73 km east on the freeway, and then turns south for the last thirteen kilometres on County Road 34, the old Highway 34, which becomes Main Street when it reaches the town. At that distance a repair is booked as a window rather than a time, and nobody quotes minutes for it. Say the street when you ring, say whether the garage is attached, and say what the door is doing: a bang followed by a door that will not lift is a different van load from a door that reverses two feet off the floor.

A mill, a railway, and then very little building

Alexandria took its name from Alexander Macdonell, whose Priest's Mill went up in 1819 on land settled from 1792 by Highland Scots leaving the Clearances. The Canada Atlantic Railway reached it in the early 1880s and made the town a shipping point for farmers between Ottawa and Montreal; the station on McDougald Street opened in 1917 and has been a designated heritage railway station since 1994. Every train on the VIA Ottawa to Montreal line still stops there.

Then the building stopped. The 2021 Census counts about 1,440 occupied dwellings in Alexandria, and 530 of them date from 1960 or before, with another 460 from 1961 to 1980. That is roughly seven houses in ten standing before 1981. Across the whole of 2006 to 2021 the town added about 100 dwellings. For a Scottish-named town the language count is closer than the name suggests: 1,360 residents gave English as their mother tongue in 2021 and 1,250 gave French, out of 2,840. Almost every door here goes into an older opening

Towns with a 2000s subdivision get a wave of first spring failures about twenty years after the builder finishes. Alexandria has no such wave, because it has no such subdivision. The hundred-odd houses built here since 2006 are scattered, and everything else is working on its second, third or fourth door.

What that means on a service call is that the opening usually predates the door in it. A door fitted into a nineteenth or early twentieth century frame is sitting on whatever the last installer found, and the header, the jambs and the floor line are the things to look at before the hardware. A door that binds on one side or drags at one corner is often a frame that has moved rather than a door that has failed, and swapping the spring on it fixes nothing. Ask the technician to check the opening square when the door is down.

The Games are in Maxville, and the permit counter is in Alexandria

The Glengarry Highland Games have run in Maxville since 1948, draw more than 20,000 people on the first weekend in August, and are the largest Highland Games held outside Scotland. Maxville is 22 km from Alexandria and in the same township. Saying Glengarry on the phone therefore says almost nothing about where the van is going, so give the town and the street.

North Glengarry runs its Building, Planning and By-law Enforcement Department out of 3720 County Road 34 in Alexandria, and it is the counter for Maxville as well. The Township does not publish a square-metre threshold for accessory buildings on that page the way some of its neighbours do, so ask it directly for your address before a new garage or a widened opening goes ahead. A door hung in the opening it came out of is a different question.

Ice on the frame, not just on the door

The January 1998 storm dropped 108 mm of freezing rain and ice pellets on Cornwall, more than fell on Ottawa or on Kingston, and Alexandria sits inside that band. Ordinary freezing rain is the version worth planning for. On a newer door the water sets in the joints between the sections. On an older door in an older frame it runs down the face and sets in the gap between the door and the vertical stops, which glues the door to the frame rather than to itself. The symptom is the same and the response is not force: an opener asked to tear a door off its own stops will strip its gear or bend the top section. Free the edges first, then run it.
