The van uses the same road as the commute

Rockland has no Protech premises. The van comes from Nepean: the 417 across the city, the 174 out through Orléans, then County Road 17, which is the same road under a different name once it crosses the Ottawa boundary. That last stretch is the problem. County Road 17 through Rockland is still two lanes and carries more than 22,500 vehicles a day, the United Counties' own figure from 2025-07-07; the environmental assessment for four-laning it was finished in 2016 and the counties were still paying for design work in 2025. Anyone who drives it at 7:30 a.m. knows what that means.

So a same-day repair in Rockland is booked as a window in the day, and a call that comes in before the westbound crush is easier to land than one at 4 p.m.

A mill town that became a commuter town

William Cameron Edwards put a sawmill at McCaul Point in 1868. Rockland became a town in 1908, got its sewers in 1964, and had lost the mill in 1926, when part of the population followed the work to Quebec. The town that survived had 2,118 people in 1931 and was still only 3,649 in 1971. Then Ottawa arrived: 6,771 people in 1991, 10,980 in 2011, 13,625 in 2021.

The 2021 Census puts Rockland's housing in a spread with no dominant decade. Of 5,370 occupied dwellings, 450 date from 1960 or before, 730 from 1961 to 1980, 915 from the 1980s, 845 from the 1990s, 1,225 from 2001 to 2010 and 1,205 from 2011 to 2021. Nothing about one street predicts the next. A house from the Edwards years near the river was built before its owner had a car, so whatever garage it has was added later, usually standing apart from the house and usually narrower than a modern door. A 1980s house has an attached garage on its second or third set of springs. The 2000s streets are at the point where the original spring pair goes, and the houses built since 2011 are still on the opener the builder hung. Say which of those you have and the van leaves with the right parts.

Freezing rain on the river

Ottawa and the communities around it get at least a dozen episodes of freezing rain in an average winter, by the Historical Society of Ottawa's count, and Rockland sits on the river at the receiving end of them. The 1998 storm is the one everyone here remembers: freezing rain from 3 a.m. on 5 January until 4 p.m. on 9 January, 85 mm of precipitation in Ottawa with most of it landing as ice, and more than 230,000 customers dark across eastern Ontario.

For a garage door the ordinary version is the one to plan for. Freezing rain runs down the face of the door, gets into the joints between the sections and freezes them into one stiff panel. The opener then tries to bend a door that will not bend, and the top section and its hinges take the strain first. If the door goes up a foot and stops in an ice storm, stop pressing the button. Pull the release cord, work the sections free by hand, and run the opener once the door moves as four pieces again. A door that comes up crooked afterwards has thrown a cable, and that is a call, not a job for a stepladder.

Two languages

Rockland is bilingual in the plain sense: 7,315 of its 13,445 residents gave French as their mother tongue in 2021, 4,735 gave English, and 8,930 said they could hold a conversation in both. Ask when you call whether French is available on the line.
