The 416, the 401, and what same day means at 95 km

The route is fixed: Prince of Wales Drive to the 416, the 416 to its end at the 401 near Johnstown, then 23 km west to the Brockville exits at County Road 29 and North Augusta Road. No drive time is quoted: a clear run down the 416 is not a January freezing-rain warning.

A same-day call to Brockville means the van is committed to the St. Lawrence for that day. Ontario's first town, and garages younger than the houses

Brockville incorporated on 1832-01-28, the first self-governing town in what is now Ontario, and the 2021 census shows it. Of 10,645 occupied dwellings, 4,135 were built in 1960 or earlier and another 3,490 between 1961 and 1980. Seven in ten Brockville homes predate 1981. About 1,050 have gone up since 2001.

That mix produces two kinds of call. The first is a detached garage beside an older house in the blocks near the river, built for a narrower car, where the door is a later addition sized to an opening nobody standardised. A replacement there is measured on the day, never picked from a chart. The second is the 1960s and 1970s bungalow and split-level stock between the old town and the 401, with an attached single or double on its second or third set of springs. The plants on California Avenue

The 401 side of Brockville is industrial. 3M makes pressure-sensitive and masking tape at 60 California Avenue. Procter and Gamble left in 2020 and took close to 500 jobs with it; Biscuits Leclerc bought the 790,000 square foot plant on the same avenue in January 2022 with a plan to put more than $100 million into it. Brockville General Hospital opened the Donald B. Green Tower at its Charles Street site in 2020: 175,000 square feet, 93 beds.

Buildings like those run overhead doors on loading bays that stand open for hours in winter and take a forklift bump a few times a year. Eighty hours of freezing rain

Brockville sits in the belt that takes the St. Lawrence corridor's freezing rain. In the storm of 1998-01-04 to 1998-01-10 the valley from Kingston eastward received up to 100 mm of ice pellets and freezing rain, more than 230,000 customers in eastern Ontario lost power, and the freezing rain and drizzle ran to more than eighty hours across the region. Environment Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for Brockville: a January daily mean of minus 7.2 degrees, 180 cm of snow a year, 42 snowy days.

With the power off, the opener is dead weight on the door and the red release cord is the only way to open it by hand. A door with a sound spring lifts easily once released. A door with a broken spring does not lift at all, and forcing it bends the track. If your door took two people to lift during the last outage, the spring was already gone. Brockville permits, in the City's own words

The City of Brockville does not require a building permit for an accessory building of up to 15 square metres, about 10 feet by 16, and caps a residential accessory building at 4.0 metres to the midpoint of the roof. Anything bigger goes through Cloudpermit. Replacing the door in an existing opening is not a new structure. Widening the opening, or putting a taller door on a detached garage, is a question for the City's Planning Department, asked before the door is ordered.

Repair or replace, in Brockville terms

A cable set on a 1975 attached double is a small job. A spring pair on the same door is a bigger one, and both cost less than a door. Replace the door when the bottom section has rusted through, when the wood of a pre-1960 detached garage door has gone soft along the slab, or when a single-skin steel door on an attached garage under a bedroom is the reason that room is cold.
