Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Currier founded the village in 1859 and built the grist mill that still stands, of limestone quarried out of the river bed. It was working by 1860. Dickinson House followed in 1867 and served as the general store, the bank, the post office and the telegraph office at once. The plan for the village was registered with the County of Carleton in 1862, and the name comes from an Algonquin-Anishinabe word meaning island.
