A mill village, and it still reads like one

Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Currier founded the village in 1859 and built the grist mill that still stands, of limestone quarried out of the river bed. It was working by 1860. Dickinson House followed in 1863 and served as the general store, the bank, the post office and the telegraph office at once. The plan for the village was registered with the County of Carleton in 1862, and the name comes from an Algonquin-Anishinabe word meaning island.

An insulated door will not warm an unheated building; what it will do is stiffen the door and quieten it, which is worth having on its own terms but is not the reason a salesman usually gives.

What matters more out here is the bottom of the door. A slab with no heat under it stays at ground temperature, so a rubber bottom seal freezes to it readily, and an opener asked to break that bond will strip its gears or pull the bottom bracket out of the door before the ice lets go. Keep the slab clear through the winter. Rubber holds up through freeze and thaw considerably better than PVC, and on a detached garage that is the single seal worth specifying.

Grit, gravel and rust

Long drives, gravel and road sand put more abrasive at the foot of a Manotick door than a suburban one sees. It shows up in two places: rollers whose bearings pick up grit and stop turning, so the roller slides and eventually climbs out of the track, and the bottom section of a steel door, which is where rust starts and where the retainer that holds the weather seal eventually gives out. A rusted bottom section is the most common honest reason to replace an otherwise sound door.

Shops, sheds and oversized openings

Not every door in Manotick is on a house. Hobby shops, machine sheds and three-bay outbuildings turn up regularly, and they bring openings and weights a residential catalogue does not cover. Say the width and the height of the opening when you call, and say whether the building is heated, because those two facts decide the door, the spring and the operator between them.

On the streets around the mill, what a door looks like matters more than it does out on the concessions. Carriage-style doors, which are ordinary sectional doors with strap hinges, handles and a stepped or arched top row, are the usual answer on a heritage streetscape. They lift on tracks like any other door and work with a standard opener.
