A name that outlived its municipality

Gloucester was Township B when it was laid out in 1792. It was incorporated as a township in 1850, reached city status in 1981, and was folded into the amalgamated City of Ottawa in 2001. An address in Blackburn Hamlet or Beacon Hill has been an Ottawa address for more than twenty years, and people still say Gloucester, because it is the shortest way to describe a large piece of the east and south of the city.

That is worth knowing before anyone quotes you, because the name covers a wider spread of housing than any other Ottawa district.

Sixty years apart at either end

Beacon Hill and Blackburn Hamlet were built in the 1960s. Pineview and the streets around Ogilvie are of a similar age. Hunt Club filled in through the 1970s and 1980s. Riverside South, on the other side of the Rideau, is one of the newest parts of Ottawa and is still being built.

So a call from Gloucester is one of two entirely different jobs. At the north end it is old stock: extension springs on single-car doors with a containment cable that may never have been fitted, wooden doors whose bottom rail has been wicking water off the slab for decades, and openers old enough to predate the photo-eye sensors near the floor. An opener with no sensors is replaced rather than repaired.

At the south end it is first-failure work: a torsion pair reaching the end of its rated life on a door fitted in the 2000s, an opener whose nylon drive gear has stripped so the motor runs and the door does not, and photo eyes knocked out of alignment by a bike or a snow shovel. The last of those is usually five minutes and no parts.

Doors near the airport lands

Uplands and the streets around it sit beside the airport, and older properties there have often been through a noise-attenuation retrofit that thickened the walls and the windows of the house. It does nothing for the garage. A door on an attached garage under a bedroom is a real noise path, and a belt drive with a soft start and stop is what stops the 6 a.m. departure waking the house. A chain drive is cheaper and considerably louder.
