On the coldest mornings in Ottawa a garage door can be frozen, stiff and broken all at once, and the three need different answers. One minute with the red cord
With the door closed, pull the red release cord on the opener rail and try to lift the door from the bottom handle.
It will not move at all, but it does not feel heavy, just held: the bottom edge is frozen to the slab. It rises a few centimetres and then feels like a car: a spring has broken, and there will be a gap of an inch or two in the coil above the door. It lifts, but slowly and stiffly, and settles back down: the door is working against cold hardware, and an opener will strain on it all morning. It lifts smoothly and stays at waist height: the door is fine, and the problem is the opener.
Frozen to the slab
Free the bottom edge from inside, along its full width, with a plastic scraper or a de-icer. Hot water runs under the seal and refreezes harder. Once it is free, clear the strip of concrete in front of the door so tonight's meltwater has somewhere to go, and wipe the rubber dry. Heavy means stop
A door that lifts like dead weight has lost its counterbalance, and the answer is to leave it closed. How do I open the garage from the driveway if the house has no door into it?
Only if the door has an emergency release lock: a small keyed cylinder in the top section that pulls the release cord from outside. Turn the key, lift the door by hand, and it is on manual. Without that lock there is no safe way in from outside, and prying at a door on a broken spring is how people get hurt. On an attached garage with no inside door, the lock is a small part worth having fitted before the next cold snap.
The door is stuck open in the cold. How do I get it down?
Pull the cord and lower it by hand with a second person, keeping fingers away from the section joints. If it drops faster than you can hold, a spring is gone: let it down no further, clamp the track below a roller, and call. If it comes down easily, lock it with the slide lock on the inside of the door and leave the opener off until the reason it would not close has been found.
What stops the seal freezing down again tomorrow?
Keep the slab clear in front of the door, and treat the rubber with a silicone spray made for seals rather than grease, which collects grit. Knock snow off the car before driving in, so less water reaches the floor. If the concrete has sunk into a hollow at the door, water will pool there every thaw, and a thicker seal or a threshold is the lasting fix.
