Protech Garage Doors repairs and replaces garage doors and openers in Arnprior, on the pre-1960 streets by the Madawaska and in the subdivisions that went up after Highway 417 reached the town, with a van sent from the shop at 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean, about 60 km by road. The 417 runs the whole way. The phone line is open 24 hours. Call (613) 845-9950 for a spring that broke this morning, a door off its cable, an opener that has stopped answering the remote, or a quote on a new door.
Arnprior grew after the freeway arrived, and the doors show it
Highway 417 reached Arnprior on 2004-09-24. The bypass was twinned and opened on 2012-11-29, 5.6 km of freeway with a new interchange at White Lake Road and a second crossing of the Madawaska, and another 5.3 km opened in December 2016. The four lanes now end west of Campbell Drive, north-west of the town, and everything beyond is Highway 17.
The town filled in behind it. Statistics Canada counted 8,795 people in 2016 and 9,629 in 2021, up 9.5%. Of the 4,305 occupied dwellings in the 2021 Census, 1,340 were built in 1960 or before and 1,140 were built between 2006 and 2021. A quarter of the housing is younger than the freeway. So an Arnprior call is one of two jobs: a door on a house older than the 417, often the second or third door that garage has had, or a builder-grade door from the last twenty years still on its first set of springs, with the opener that came with the house.
The river town underneath
Daniel McLachlin built his sawmill where the Madawaska meets the Ottawa, and the Gillies mill at Braeside ran until 1992-05-01. The Union Carbide nylon plant that opened in 1966 is still running as Nylene Canada, making nylon 6 resin. Boeing set up in Arnprior in 1955; the successor plant, Arnprior Aerospace, closed on 2024-03-06. The town keeps its industrial buildings after the first tenant leaves, and the loading doors on them outlast the name on the sign. Protech services and replaces commercial doors and commercial openers as well as the doors on houses.
Sixty kilometres of freeway
The shop is at 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean, about 60 km from the centre of Arnprior by the 417. There is no Arnprior premises. The old site claimed one, in those words. There is none. Repairs are booked same day. Give the street, the door type and whether the garage is attached when you call, because the town is on both banks of the Madawaska and the dispatcher plans the run from the street, not the town name.
Snow and cold in Arnprior, measured
Environment Canada's Arnprior station recorded a January mean of minus 11.5 and 143.6 cm of snow a year over 1981 to 2010. Ottawa's city station reads minus 9.6 and 184.5 cm over 1991 to 2020, a later period, so the two are not a clean pair. What holds either way: Arnprior's January is colder than Ottawa's, and the commuter who leaves for the 417 at half past six finds out about the door at the coldest hour of the day. The line is open then.
Permits, from the Town of Arnprior's own page
The Town lists "decks, porches, carports, garages (detached or attached) and other accessory buildings" among the projects that need a building permit, and exempts a shed under 15 square metres with no plumbing. Applications go through the Town's online portal. A new door in an existing opening is not on that list. If the opening is being widened or the garage is new, ask the Building Department at 105 Elgin Street West before the work is quoted.
Repair or replace, in Arnprior terms
A 2010s builder door with one broken spring is a spring repair, and the door has years left. A 1950s single-skin steel door on a river-street garage, rusted along the bottom and bent where a bumper met it, is a replacement, and putting a spring on it is money spent on a door that is leaving. The Garaga designer will show the new door on a photo of the house. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.

Is Arnprior really same day, 60 km out?
Repairs are booked same day and Arnprior is inside that, because the run is 60 km of divided highway rather than the old Highway 17 through every village. The four lanes now end west of Campbell Drive. What moves the window is which side of the Madawaska you are on, so give the street when you call (613) 845-9950, not just the town.
Do I need a permit to replace the door on my Arnprior garage?
The Town of Arnprior lists garages, detached or attached, among the projects that need a building permit, and exempts a shed under 15 square metres with no plumbing. A door swapped into an opening that already exists is not on that list. Widening the opening is a different job. Ask the Building Department at 105 Elgin Street West about your address before the door is ordered.
The door will not lift on a cold morning. What should I tell you?
Tell us which of the two it did: rose a few inches and stopped, or did not move at all. They are different jobs and they load the van differently. Arnprior records a January mean of minus 11.5 and 143.6 cm of snow a year, so the call usually comes at the hour the commuter is leaving for the 417. The line answers at that hour: (613) 845-9950.
