About 75 km, the closest of the eastern towns

Plantagenet has no Protech premises. The van takes Merivale to the 417, runs the 174 out through Orléans, and then stays on County Road 17 for another 25 km past Rockland, turning off at Old Highway 17 for the village. That is about 75 km, which makes Plantagenet the shortest run of the far eastern towns: closer than Alexandria, closer than Hawkesbury, and on the only road any of them share. Eighteen communities and one township name

Alfred and Plantagenet was created on 1997-01-01 out of the townships of Alfred and North Plantagenet and the villages of Alfred and Plantagenet, and it holds eighteen named communities inside 391.79 square kilometres. Plantagenet and Plantagenet Station are two of them, and Wendover, Curran, Treadwell, Lefaivre, Pendleton, Jessups Falls and Alfred Station are others. So the word Plantagenet on a phone call narrows the address by less than a caller usually thinks. Name the community as well as the road.

It is thinly settled: 9,949 people at 25.4 to the square kilometre in 2021, up 2.8% from 2016. It is also strongly French-speaking. 7,015 residents gave French as their mother tongue against 2,220 who gave English, out of 9,855. Ask when you call whether French is available on the line.

Old houses with no old downtown

The 2021 Census counts about 4,080 occupied dwellings in the township, of which 915 date from 1960 or before and 1,005 from 1961 to 1980. Then 580 in the 1980s, 525 in the 1990s, 555 across 2001 to 2010 and 505 since 2011. Every decade is represented and none of them runs away with it.

The part that matters on a service call is where the old ones are. In a mill town the pre-1961 houses are a downtown you can walk in twenty minutes. Here those 915 dwellings are spread down the river road and through eighteen hamlets across four hundred square kilometres, so there is no old quarter and no new quarter, and two addresses ten minutes apart can be seventy years apart. Nothing about the road name tells the technician what is above the door. What you say on the phone does: single or double, wood or steel, one spring on a bar across the top or two long ones running back along the tracks.

Where the township draws the permit line, and it names doors

Alfred and Plantagenet publishes the answer most people want. A detached garage or shed needs a building permit when it exceeds 161 square feet, which is 15 square metres, and not below that. And the Township lists the widening of window and door frames as work that requires a permit, which is the garage door case stated in the Township's own words: putting a new door into the opening that is there is one job, and cutting that opening wider is a different one with a permit attached to it. Replacing shingles is on the no-permit side of the same list. The building department is at 205 Old Highway 17 in Plantagenet, open weekdays, and it says plainly to check before a project starts rather than after.
