The package question, which nobody on this page of Google answers

Search this and half of what Google suggests is about buying a door as a package from a big-box retailer. It is a fair thing to wonder about and the honest answer has a shape rather than a verdict: a package is a fixed product fitted to a standard opening, and an install is a door specified to yours. Where the opening is square, standard width and has ordinary headroom, those two things land in the same place. Where it is not, they do not, and the difference shows up in the hardware rather than in the panel.

The part that separates them is the counterbalance. Springs are sized to the weight of the specific door on the specific opening, and Garaga's own troubleshooting notes for a door somebody put in themselves read like a list of what goes wrong when that sizing is off: a door that is very heavy and only rises halfway, one that flies up and fights being lowered, one that closes fast but is heavy to raise, one that creeps back up two or three inches from the threshold. Every one of those is spring tension, not panel quality.

So the question worth asking any quote, ours included, is not what the door costs. It is whether the springs are being specified for that door on that opening, and who comes back if the door does not balance.

Lane garages and rear-detached, which is most of the old city

A large part of Toronto inside the old boundaries parks off a lane, in a detached garage at the back of the lot. That changes an installation more than any feature of the door does, and it is worth saying at the quote stage rather than on the morning.

Three things follow. Access: a lane a van cannot enter, or cannot stand in without blocking it, means the door and the track are carried the length of the lot. Structure: a detached garage is usually a lighter wood frame than an attached one, it has moved with the ground over decades, and the header the track hangs from is the thing to look at before the panel is chosen. And power: a detached garage without a circuit cannot take an opener, and finding that out on installation day is an electrician's appointment rather than a small delay.

None of it stops a job. All of it changes what gets loaded on the van, which is why the photograph and one line about the lane are worth more than any other detail you can send.

What a measure finds in an old opening

Openings in houses built before the 1970s are rarely square, and they are rarely the size somebody says they are. Measure the frame at the left, the centre and the right and the three numbers usually disagree, which is why the largest of them is the one a door is ordered to. Then the headroom, which is the distance from the top of the opening to the ceiling or to the lowest thing crossing it, and it decides the track rather than the door. A garage short of headroom takes a different lift, not a different panel, and that is a solved problem rather than a reason to stop.

Side room matters on a narrow single garage, particularly where a wall or a staircase runs close to the opening. And the floor is worth a glance: a slab that has lifted at one corner is why a new door can seal tight on one side and show daylight on the other, and a taller bottom seal is the usual answer.
