Off the Trans-Canada, up the Bonnechere

The 417 to Arnprior, Highway 17 to Renfrew, then Highway 60 west for about 40 km along the Bonnechere. Highway 60 runs 255.8 km from Huntsville through Algonquin Park to Highway 17 near Renfrew, and Highway 41, Pembroke to Napanee, crosses it in Eganville. The van does not pass Eganville on the way to anywhere else, which is the difference between Eganville and Cobden: a Cobden call rides on the Pembroke run, an Eganville call is booked as its own leg. There is no Eganville premises, and at 130 km same day is not promised.

A village rebuilt after 1911

Gregoire Belanger settled here in 1825 and John Egan's grist mill is what the township credits with the village's growth. On a day in 1911 a fire started by two teenagers smoking in a shed took 75 homes, with schools, churches and industries on both banks of the river. The municipal building went up the next year. So "built in 1960 or before", which describes 695 of the township's 1,735 occupied dwellings, means something different in the village core than it does in Renfrew: the oldest streets here date from the rebuilding, and the garages on them came later still. Eganville was incorporated as a village in the 1890s and joined Grattan, Sebastopol and South Algona on 2001-01-01 to form Bonnechere Valley, which had 3,898 people in 2021, up 6.1%.

Limestone underneath, farms on top

The village sits in a limestone valley cut at the Fifth Chute of the Bonnechere. Downstream at the Fourth Chute, the Bonnechere Caves were found by a surveyor in 1855 and opened to visitors in 1955 after Tom Woodward went down a sinkhole on a rope and had the water pumped out; the rock is Ordovician, about 450 million years old, and the caves run from May to October. Above ground, 1,565 of the township's dwellings are detached houses and 1,455 are owner-occupied, 90% and 84%. The township's own permit fee schedule has a line for farm buildings, which says what a good share of the outbuildings here are. The door on one is a commercial door and is sized and priced as one; the house door is a residential door.

Permits in Bonnechere Valley

The township says the turnaround on a completed application is about two weeks. Its fee schedule lists a shed or free-standing structure of 15 square metres or under, and repairs of an emergency nature to existing doors and windows, at no charge, and a new garage as a charged permit. A wider opening on an existing garage is structural; ask the Chief Building Official at 49 Bonnechere Street East before it is quoted.

Repair or replace at the end of the run

A broken spring on a sound door is a repair, and because the trip is its own leg, the second spring and the cables are checked on the same visit rather than on a second one. A door that has rusted through at the sill or a wooden door gone soft at the bottom rail is a replacement. An opener that runs and lifts nothing is usually a gear kit. Ask for the repair and the replacement figure together, and decide with both.
