Forty kilometres: the 417 to Vars, then St-Guillaume Road

No premises in Embrun. The van leaves Nepean on Hunt Club, takes the 417 east to exit 88 at Vars, and comes down St-Guillaume Road to Notre-Dame Street, County Road 3, in the village. Embrun sits 8 km south of the highway, so the run is short and the last leg is a two-lane county road with farm traffic on it. At this distance same-day means the same day. It is still booked as a window, and the more you say on the phone about the door the tighter the window gets.

A quarter of Embrun's doors are under ten years old

Embrun was settled in 1845 and named in 1857 after the town in the French Alps, and the Saint-Jacques church on Notre-Dame Street dates from 1891. For a century it stayed a village. Then between 2001 and 2006 it grew 26.6%, the fastest in the 613 area code and eighth in Ontario, and it has not stopped since: 6,968 people in 2016, 8,680 in 2021, a rise of 24.6% in five years. The 2021 Census counts 3,225 occupied dwellings. 725 were built in the 1980s, 795 between 2001 and 2010, and 790 in the five years from 2016 to 2021 alone. Only 195 predate 1961.

So a repair call in Embrun is likelier than anywhere else on the Ottawa run to be about a door less than ten years old, and those doors do not break the way old ones do. They arrive with a builder-grade steel door, a spring sized to that door and no heavier, and an opener whose force and travel limits were set once on the day of hand-over and never again. Russell Township's building permit page lists South Nation Conservation approval as a requirement when building near a watercourse, and under Ontario Regulation 41/24 the conservation authority's regulated area covers the floodplain and 30 metres either side of a wetland. A garage door hung in an existing opening is not development. A new detached garage on a lot that backs onto one of the four branches is, and the township wants the conservation authority's approval with the application. The township's own threshold for a permit on a detached garage or shed is 15 square metres, and from 2026-05-04 to 2026-09-02 it has been issuing 48-hour permits for sheds and minor residential work submitted before noon on a Monday. That programme is Russell Township's. Casselman and The Nation run their own counters and neither offers it.

Half French, and the next village is not

4,335 of Embrun's 8,605 residents gave French as their mother tongue in 2021 and 3,405 gave English; 5,680 can hold a conversation in both. Russell village, 8 km west on the same river and in the same township, is 74% English. The township offices are here, at 717 Notre-Dame Street.
