145 km, and the honest version of same day

Gananoque is the last exit before Kingston on the run west from Ottawa, about 145 km from the shop. A clear run down the 401 and a summer Friday when it carries the whole province toward the islands are two different drives, so no time is quoted here.

A same-day call to Gananoque means one van spends its day on the St. Lawrence. Half of Gananoque was built before 1960

Of 2,565 occupied dwellings counted in 2021, 1,270 were built in 1960 or earlier. That is 49.5 per cent, and it is what a river town that stopped growing looks like: 580 more houses from 1961 to 1980, and 90 in the five years to 2021. The median age is 53. Joel Stone built a sawmill on the west bank of the Gananoque River in 1789, the river ran factories on both banks through the 1800s, a county history of 1879 called the place the Birmingham of Eastern Ontario, and the town incorporated in 1890.

The garages are younger than the houses, because a house from 1910 did not come with one. Most of what Protech sees here is a detached single garage beside or behind the house, put up decades after it and sized to the car of that decade. Boats, marinas, and doors taller than a car

Gananoque calls itself the Gateway to the Thousand Islands, and the town runs a municipal marina at 21 Bay Street with 398 seasonal and transient slips for boats up to 48 feet. Around it are the private marinas, the boat-storage sheds and the waterfront houses that keep a boat on a trailer through the winter. A boat on a trailer is taller than a car. The door in front of it is a commercial-height door on a residential lot, or a commercial door on a storage building, opened hard in April and October and left alone between.

Heritage, and the Town's permit line

Gananoque requires a building permit for any work on a designated heritage property, renovation, demolition or partial demolition included. It also requires one for any new accessory structure over 10 square metres, with a residential storage shed exempt up to 15 square metres. A replacement door in an existing opening on an ordinary house is not a new structure. On a heritage-designated house it is a question for the Town first, and the door is ordered after the answer. Winter where the lake becomes the river

The Thousand Islands are where Lake Ontario turns into the St. Lawrence, and Gananoque takes the corridor's winters: the freezing rain of January 1998 fell from Kingston eastward, and the town is the next one east of Kingston on the same shore. A door that dragged in the fall drags harder in January once the grease has thickened and the spring steel has stiffened. What changes is the distance: a tune-up in Gananoque is booked onto a run, so book it in October rather than waiting for the first cold morning.

Repair or replace, in Gananoque terms

A cable set or a spring pair on a 1970s attached single is a repair. A door on a 1920s detached garage with a bottom rail gone soft against the slab is a replacement, and a spring fitted to it is spent on a door that is leaving. A boat-shed door with a bottom section bent by a trailer hitch is usually a section, not a door. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.
