Sixty kilometres east, not south

Chesterville is in North Dundas, and the shortest road to it does not go through Dundas County at all. The van takes Hunt Club onto Highway 417 heading east, comes off at Boundary Road, drops south past Russell and picks up County Road 7 for the last ten kilometres into the village. About 60 km by road. Winchester is in the same township, twelve kilometres west of here, and the van reaches it by an entirely different road: straight down Bank Street. Two villages, one council, two routes.

That matters when the phone rings. A Chesterville job and a Winchester job do not sit on the same run, so they are not the same afternoon. Repairs are booked same day, and at this distance that means a window in the day rather than the next hour. Give the street. Armstrong's Mills, and the name it changed in 1875

George Hummel bought land on the South Nation River around 1822 and put up a mill. Thomas Armstrong and his son John built a saw mill and a grist mill on Hummel's land around 1828, and the settlement that grew around them was Armstrong's Mills. The name Chesterville was in use by the 1840s and became official in 1875, chosen to stop the confusion with the other Winchester-named places nearby. The village crossed its river on a wooden footbridge in the 1840s, an iron bridge from 1888, and the concrete bridge that went in on 1950-11-21 and is still there.

The plant that gave the village its water main

In 1916 the Hires Condensed Milk Company laid a water main along Queen and Main Streets, and that main brought Chesterville its first fire hydrants. Two years later the same site became Nestle's first milk plant in Canada, opening as The Maple Leaf Condensed Milk Company. It made condensed milk here for 88 years and closed in 2006.

A village shaped around one industrial site ends up with buildings sized for work that has moved on. Openings framed for a truck that no longer comes, shops and yards that have changed hands more than once, and doors chosen by whoever owned the place at the time. A village with fewer people than it had in 2016

Chesterville counted 1,564 people in 2021, down 6.7 per cent on 2016. It had 775 in 1891, 1,094 in 1951 and 1,559 in 1991, so the village is roughly the size it was thirty years ago. Across the whole Township of North Dundas the 2021 Census counts 4,540 occupied private dwellings, of which 210 went up between 2011 and 2015 and 190 between 2016 and 2021. Four hundred new dwellings in a decade, across a township of eleven thousand people.

Almost nothing here is under ten years old, which changes what a repair call is about. On a new door the question is usually which part failed. On a door that has been on the building for thirty years the question is what else moved when it failed: a spring that went while the door was up will have taken the cables with it, and a track that has been nudged out of line by an old opener will chew rollers until it is straightened. Repair or replace on a Chesterville door

A gear kit, a roller set or a pair of cables is a small job and worth doing on almost any door that is otherwise sound. A spring pair is a larger one and still a fraction of a new door. Replace when the bottom section has rusted through, when a wooden bottom rail has gone soft on the slab, or when the sections no longer meet across the middle and the door lets weather in whatever you do to the seal. One local note on paperwork. North Dundas publishes a separate agricultural building permit checklist alongside its residential ones, so a farm building is its own kind of application at that counter rather than a variation on a house. Hanging a door in an existing opening is not new construction. A wider opening or a new building is a question for the Township, and it is cheaper to ask before the door is ordered.
