Protech Garage Doors repairs garage doors and openers in Deep River, the planned town laid out in 1944 for the Chalk River plant, with a van sent from 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean, about 190 km by road: the 417 to Arnprior and Highway 17 the rest of the way. The phone line is open 24 hours. Call (613) 845-9950, and say the door type and what it is doing, because at this distance the part has to be on the truck the first time.
A town built in one go
The federal government began planning Deep River in 1944 to house the staff of Chalk River Laboratories, about 10 km east. John Bland of McGill drew the plan, with streets that follow the contours and neighbourhoods radiating from a commercial core. The first houses were 120 wartime four-room W-4s trucked in from Nobel and reassembled, and thirty new houses in the first pass of construction. Defence Industries Limited ran the town until 1947, then the National Research Council, with a year under Central Mortgage and Housing in 1950 that did not work and was reversed. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited took over both the plant and the town in 1952, and in April 1956 some of the AECL houses were offered for sale to the people living in them. The town was incorporated on 1959-01-01. The 2021 Census counted 4,175 people, and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is still the employer.
What one build era means for a door
Of 1,865 occupied dwellings in 2021, 920 were built in 1960 or before and 655 between 1961 and 1980. That is 84% of the town before 1981, and only 100 dwellings built in the twenty years to 2021. 1,490 households own their home and 1,400 of the dwellings are detached houses.
So the door on a Deep River garage is almost never the first one. A garage from the 1950s has had two or three doors and as many openers, and what is on it now is what the last installer chose: sometimes a torsion shaft on a door whose tracks were laid for the previous hardware, sometimes a good door on an opener two generations older than it. The owner has usually been in the house long enough to know that history, which is the opposite of the garrison town down the road. Tell the technician what the last installer left behind, and look at the garage door problems index for the words to describe it.
190 km, and a second trip is 380
There is no Deep River premises. The 417 gives out at Arnprior and the remaining 130 km is two-lane Highway 17 through Renfrew, Cobden, Pembroke and Petawawa. Same day is not promised. The dispatcher books a day and the truck is loaded from the phone call: whether the spring is one shaft above the door or two springs along the tracks, the width of the door in feet, the brand on the opener housing, and what the door does when the button is pressed. Photographs help. A part left in Nepean is a 380 km round trip, which is why the call is a longer one than a Nepean call.
Winter on the Laurentian edge
The nearest station with a full set of normals is Petawawa Airport, about 30 km back down Highway 17: a January mean of minus 11.9, a daily minimum of minus 17.9, a record of minus 41.1 and 199 cm of snow a year over 1991 to 2020, against minus 9.6, minus 14.0 and 184.5 cm at Ottawa's city station. Deep River faces the Laurentians across the river and its own readings are not published as a full table, so the page uses Petawawa's and says so.
Repair or replace on a 1950s garage, and the permit
A broken spring on a door with straight tracks and sound panels is a repair, whatever the door's age. A door that has been shimmed and patched by three installers, or a wooden door rotted from the sill up, is a replacement fitted to the opening as it is. An opener with a stripped gear is a gear kit, and one without safety sensors is replaced with the door. The Town of Deep River needs a building permit for a detached accessory building such as a garage larger than 10 square metres; a new door in an existing opening is not that, and the Town office at 100 Deep River Road answers the rest.

Why is the phone call longer than usual for Deep River?
Because a part left behind in Nepean is a 380 km round trip. The 417 gives out at Arnprior and the remaining 130 km is two-lane Highway 17, so the truck is loaded from what you say on the phone: whether the spring is one shaft above the door or two along the tracks, the width of the door in feet, the brand on the opener housing, and what the door does when the button is pressed. Photographs to info@protechgarage.ca help.
Every garage here is from the 1950s. Does that change the repair?
It changes what the technician expects to find. Eighty-four per cent of the town was built before 1981 and only 100 dwellings went up in the twenty years to 2021, so the door on a Deep River garage is almost never the first one. What is on it is whatever the last installer chose, sometimes a torsion shaft on tracks laid for different hardware. Tell the technician what was left behind by the last one.
How cold does it actually get here, for a door?
The nearest station with a full set of normals is Petawawa Airport, 30 km back down Highway 17: a January mean of minus 11.9, a daily minimum of minus 17.9, a record of minus 41.1 and 199 cm of snow a year over 1991 to 2020. Ottawa reads minus 9.6 and 184.5 cm. Deep River publishes no full table of its own, so a winter service visit is planned around Petawawa numbers.
