Sixty kilometres, and the last six are Landry Road

There is no Protech address in Clarence Creek or anywhere else in Clarence-Rockland. The van comes out the 417 and the 174, through Rockland on Laurier Street, and then south on County Road 8, Landry Road, for the last 6 km. Sixty kilometres is the far end of this group of villages, and a same-day booking here means a window in the day rather than an hour in it. Two things shorten the window: calling early, and saying on the phone whether the door is on the house, on a detached garage, or on a farm building, because those are different doors on different springs and the van should leave Nepean with the right ones.

A village of farms since 1853

Clarence Creek was founded in 1853 by farmers from St-Augustin in Canada East who came for land. There were 200 families by 1865, a post office by 1867, another 50 families by 1873, and the church of Sainte-Félicité, finished in 1891, still stands. In 1895 the Grand Trunk ran a line south from Rockland to Limoges through the village so hay could go to the United States. It is still farm country. The City of Clarence-Rockland's own history gives farming as the reason the village exists, and the 2021 Census publishes no separate figures for Clarence Creek at all, which is what a village inside a rural township looks like on paper. The city as a whole had 26,505 people that year, 14,910 of whom gave French as their mother tongue, and Clarence Creek is one of the seven communities inside it.

Doors on a working farm are a different job

The doors that break here are as often on a machine shed, an equipment bay or a workshop as on a house. Those doors are taller and wider, they open many more times in a day than a household door, and they hang on a chain hoist or a heavy-duty opener rather than a belt-drive unit off a hardware shelf. Clarence-Rockland's zoning allows for it: a rural or agricultural property may put up an accessory building bigger than the house itself, to a height of 6 metres, where a lot in Rockland's urban zone is held to 3.8 metres. That difference is the reason a Clarence Creek call is not a Rockland call. The 1998 storm, from a dairy farm

Eastern Ontario's dairy farms were the worst-placed buildings in the January 1998 ice storm. Nobody plans for that storm again. Every winter brings smaller versions, and a shop door with a powered opener and no power is a door that has to be opened by hand. Know where the release is on every opener on the property, keep the manual chain on any door that has one, and have the springs checked before the ground freezes, because a spring that fails during an outage leaves a door that two people cannot lift.
