Protech Garage Doors repairs garage doors and openers in Hawkesbury, the mill town on the Ottawa River at the far end of the 417, with a van sent from 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean, about 110 km away by road. The phone line is open 24 hours. Call (613) 845-9950 for a broken spring, a door off its track, an opener that will not close, or a quote on a replacement door.
About 110 km, and Highway 34 for the last seventeen
Protech has no premises in Hawkesbury. The van runs 79 km east on the 417 and then leaves the freeway for Highway 34, seventeen kilometres of two-lane road that goes up through Vankleek Hill and into town as McGill Street. That last stretch is the whole difference between this town and the ones beside the freeway. At this distance a call is booked as a window in the day and nobody quotes minutes for it.
A lumber town that stopped growing
Hawkesbury was founded in 1798 and named for Charles Jenkinson, Baron Hawkesbury. Thomas Mears and David Pattee went into partnership in 1805 and built the first sawmill on the river here; by 1870 the mill complex ran 145 saws and cut more than 35 million board feet a year. What followed the lumber was manufacturing, and the town still carries textiles, synthetic fibres, metal extrusions, steel, glass and plastics.
The population arc is the part that shows up on a service call. Hawkesbury held 8,661 people in 1961, 9,877 in 1981 and 10,551 in 2011, and 10,194 in 2021. The 2021 Census counts about 5,080 occupied dwellings, of which 1,355 date from 1960 or before and 1,700 from 1961 to 1980. Six in ten were standing before 1981, and the whole of 2011 to 2021 added about 165. Nothing here is on its first set of springs.
This is a French-speaking town by a wide margin. 7,240 residents gave French as their mother tongue in 2021 against 1,895 who gave English, and about seven in ten can hold a conversation in both languages. Ask when you call whether French is available on the line.
Only a third of Hawkesbury has a house to itself
The 2021 Census records 1,820 single-detached houses out of those 5,080 dwellings. The rest is 685 semi-detached, 260 row houses, 815 flats in duplexes and 1,475 apartments in buildings under five storeys. That is a housing mix closer to a small city than to the villages further west, and it changes what a garage door call in Hawkesbury usually is.
Two consequences follow. Most residential doors here sit on the older single-detached streets, so a Hawkesbury door is far more likely to be a narrow single on a lot laid out before the war than a double on a 2010s driveway. And a real share of the door work in this town is on buildings nobody lives in: shared parking entries, back-of-house delivery doors on Main Street, and the plants that came in after the mills. Say which of those you are calling about, because a five-storey walk-up with a shared garage entry and a house with a single door are different vans.
The bridge to Grenville
The Long-Sault Bridge crosses the Ottawa River from Hawkesbury to Grenville, and it was built between 1950 and 1962 as part of the Carillon dam project. It is the only interprovincial bridge between Ontario and Quebec east of Ottawa, which is why the town sits where it does and why its traffic behaves the way it does. Everything here is about the Ontario side of the river.
The Town runs its construction department from the town hall at 600 Higginson Street. It publishes no square-metre threshold for accessory buildings on its permits pages, so a new garage or a widened opening is a question to put to the Town for your address. Hanging a door in the opening it came out of is a different matter.
What Protech does in Hawkesbury
Residential work first: garage door repair, a broken spring, a cable off its drum, a door that has come off the track, or an opener that runs and lifts nothing. New residential doors from Garaga, Amarr and Stanley where a replacement is the better answer. Given what the town is built of, commercial doors and commercial openers matter here more than they do in most towns this size, and they are serviced on the same line.
Repair or replace on a Hawkesbury door
The part sets the bill and the door sets the part. On a house from the mill years, the question is usually whether the door is still worth the springs. A single-skin steel door with a bottom section rusted through, or a wooden door whose bottom rail has gone soft, is a replacement, and a new spring on it is money spent on a door that is leaving. A door on sound framing that has already been changed once is a repair, and the cables go with the spring because they have run the same cycles. On a commercial door the arithmetic is different again, because downtime is part of the cost. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.

Why do you ask whether it is a house or an apartment building?
Because they are different vans. Only 1,820 of the 5,080 dwellings counted here in 2021 are single-detached; the rest is semi-detached, row houses, duplex flats and 1,475 apartments in buildings under five storeys. So a real share of the door work in this town is shared parking entries and back-of-house delivery doors rather than a door on a driveway. Say which when you ring.
What does the last seventeen kilometres mean for my booking?
It is the whole difference between Hawkesbury and the towns beside the freeway. The van runs 79 km east on the 417 and then leaves it for Highway 34, seventeen kilometres of two-lane road up through Vankleek Hill and into town as McGill Street. The call is booked as a window in the day for that reason, and nobody quotes minutes for it.
Is there a size below which a new garage needs no permit?
The Town publishes no square-metre threshold for accessory buildings on its permits pages, which is different from most of its neighbours, so do not carry a number across from another township. Put the question to the construction department at the town hall, 600 Higginson Street, for your address. Hanging a door in the opening it came out of is a different matter entirely.
