Overhead doors in St. Catharines

Why it is an overhead door here

Owen Dautrick filed for a patent on an upward-acting garage door in 1919 and got it on 1922-02-28; he and C.G. Johnson filed a second one in 1921, and by January 1923 the Detroit press was calling their firm The Overhead Door Company. The name stuck to the thing: a door that goes up over the car instead of swinging out into the driveway. In a city that made its living from engine plants and canal-side mills the trade word is the one that survived, and more people in St. Catharines search for an overhead door than for garage door repair. So Protech uses the local word here. The door it means is a sectional steel or wood door on tracks, the same residential door or commercial door that goes by garage door elsewhere.

A 1961 to 1980 city

On 1961-01-01 St. Catharines took in Grantham Township, Merritton and Port Dalhousie and more than doubled, to 84,472 people. The subdivisions that filled Grantham in the twenty years after are the city's housing: the 2021 Census counts 58,905 occupied dwellings, and 22,675 of them, 38.5 per cent, were built from 1961 to 1980, the largest share for that band of the seven Hamilton and Niagara municipalities Protech covers. Another 19,160 are from 1960 or before. Only 1,655 were built in the five years to 2021, the lowest new-build share of the seven. So the St. Catharines overhead door is usually forty-five to sixty-five years old, or a replacement of one, on an attached garage on a 1960s or 1970s street, and its opener is on its second or third life.

The opener goes first because it wears out on a schedule the house does not, and a 1970s garage under a bedroom is where the belt drive earns its place. GM left Ontario Street and stayed on Glendale Avenue

The plant at Ontario Street opened in 1901 as McKinnon Dash and Metal Works, went to General Motors in 1929, and closed in 2010; demolition began in 2016 and the site is a contaminated brownfield with lead, trichloroethylene, benzene and PCBs in it. Employment across GM's two St. Catharines plants had peaked near 9,700 around 1980. The Glendale Avenue plant is the one that stayed: on 2026-04-29 GM announced 691 million dollars to build its sixth-generation V8 there. Between the two, along the Welland Canal corridor and through Merritton, where the Lybster Mill dates from 1860, is the industrial stock whose overhead doors are dock doors and shop doors. Port Dalhousie and the heritage permit

Port Dalhousie was the Lake Ontario end of the first three Welland Canals, and its commercial core on Lakeport Road, Lock Street and Hogan's Alley, the residential streets along Main Street, Dalhousie Avenue and Bayview Avenue, the 1820s cemetery and the entry locks are a Heritage Conservation District under City By-law 2003-63. The City says an owner in the district "may need to purchase a heritage permit before beginning construction or renovation work." An overhead door facing the street on a Port Dalhousie house is exactly the kind of change to ask about before ordering it in a colour, and the answer is the City's to give.

Getting a van to St. Catharines

The run from Bonhill Road is the QEW through Hamilton and along the lake, then the 406 or the Ontario Street exit, about 100 km by road. Repairs are booked same day, and at 100 km the window is longer than it is nearer the branch; no arrival time is promised. Say the street and whether it is Port Dalhousie, Merritton, the Grantham streets or the canal side, and for a door off its track do not run it until someone is there.

Permits in St. Catharines

The City of St. Catharines lists garages, attached or detached, and carports among the projects that need a building permit, along with accessory buildings over 15 square metres and any enlarging of a door opening. A replacement door in the existing opening is not on the list. Repair or replace, and then the form

A 1972 Grantham door with a stripped opener gear is a repair. The same door with the bottom section rusted through from lake-side salt is a replacement, and the spring on it should not be replaced first.
