Papertown

Georgetown dates from 1837, when the Barber brothers bought George Kennedy's mills on Silver Creek. The Barber paper mill went up on the Credit River in 1854 and was the biggest employer in Halton County for decades; it closed in November 1948, and the coated-paper plant on Rosetta Street ran on until March 1991. The Town of Halton Hills has 4,365 occupied dwellings built in 1960 or before, and the old core of Georgetown around the river holds a good share of them: narrow lots, garages added later, doors that are a size nobody makes now.

A garage that was built after the house is the first thing to mention when you send the form. Its opening is rarely a standard 8 or 9 feet, and the door for it is ordered, not pulled off a truck.

Delrex, Moore Park and Georgetown South

The town was near 4,000 people in the mid-1940s. In the 1950s Rex Heslop bought farms and built Delrex, Moore Park followed in 1962, and Georgetown South started in 1989. Halton Hills built 5,745 dwellings between 1961 and 1980 and 3,815 in the 1990s, and those two waves are the two kinds of call. Most of Halton Hills is countryside

Halton Hills was formed on 1 January 1974 from Georgetown, Acton and most of Esquesing Township, and 15,940 of its 21,825 occupied dwellings are single-detached houses, 73 percent. Between the two towns are Glen Williams, Limehouse, Norval and Stewarttown and the farm concessions around them. A call from there is a detached shop or a machine shed on a gravel lane, a door taller and wider than a subdivision double, and an opener that has to be sized for it. Say it is rural when you send the form and give the road as well as the town.

At the south edge of the town, on Steeles Avenue, the Toronto Premium Outlets opened on 1 August 2013. Retail like that and the trucking that feeds it run commercial overhead doors and dock doors, and Protech supplies and services commercial doors and commercial openers as well as residential ones.

The permit position in Halton Hills

The Town's building permit page lists a detached garage or carport, an accessory building, and a shed over 15 square metres as work that needs a permit, and says nothing about replacing a door in an existing opening. The page's own advice is to contact Building Services when unsure. For a same-size replacement door, ask them for that address. For a wider opening, it is structural and it is a permit.

Getting a van to Georgetown

The shop is at 1495 Bonhill Rd #14 in Mississauga, about 30 km by road: the 401 west, then north on Winston Churchill Boulevard or Trafalgar Road to Highway 7. There is no Georgetown address. Repairs are booked same day. The GO train has run from Georgetown since 1974, and the doors here open for the 6 a.m. train; say the street and what the door is doing, because Glen Williams and Georgetown South are on opposite sides of the river and the window differs.

Repair or replace, in Georgetown's terms

A 1962 Moore Park single with a bottom rail that has rusted through and a 1990s opener that strips its gear every other winter is a new door and a new opener in one visit. A 1990s Georgetown South double with a broken spring is a spring repair and nothing else. A rural shop door that a tractor has clipped is a section, if the make is still in production, and a door if it is not. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.
