Woodstock sends 2,490 people out to work in the five o'clock hour, 14.0% of everyone here who travels to a job, against 7.8% across Ontario. Garage doors here are opened in the dark and the cold, and that is where they give out: the door that will not lift at half past five in January, the photo eye frosted over before dawn, the spring on a house where two drivers work opposite shifts and the door runs four times a day instead of twice. Protech Garage Doors repairs springs, cables, rollers, sensors and openers here, and fits a Garaga, Amarr or Stanley door where the old one is finished. Send the contact form or email info@protechgarage.ca.
The city leaves at five
Of the 17,830 people in Woodstock who go out to a job, 2,490 leave between 5:00 and 5:59 a.m., 14.0% against Ontario's 7.8%. Add the six o'clock hour and 6,375 of them, 35.8%, are gone before seven, where the province manages 25.4%. Another 3,610, 20.2%, leave between noon and five in the morning, the afternoon and night shift. The reason sits on the map. Manufacturing employs 5,675 people here, 23.8% of the labour force, and transportation and warehousing another 1,710 at 7.2%. Toyota builds the RAV4 at its West Plant, the newest of its three Canadian plants, where production started in 2009. General Motors runs its largest Canadian parts distribution centre on Parkinson Road, 1,015,000 square feet of it. Highway 403 has its western end at the 401 here and Highway 59 crosses the 401 in the city, which is why the freight buildings went up where they did. Protech installs and services the commercial overhead doors and commercial openers on buildings like those.
Minus nine on a slab, and what sticks to it
A door opened before dawn in January is opened at the coldest hour of the day. The climate normals for the Woodstock station, 1981 to 2010, put the January daily minimum at -9.6 C, with 32.6 cm of the year's 120.3 cm of snow falling in that one month. The number that decides what breaks is not the snow. It is 148.6 days a year that drop to or below freezing against 58.9 that never climb above it, so roughly ninety days thaw in the afternoon and freeze again after dark. Meltwater runs under the bottom seal and sets it to the concrete overnight. At half past five the opener pulls against a door held down along its whole bottom edge, and what gives is a stripped gear, a stretched cable, or a door that lifts on one side and goes off its track. The other pre-dawn fault is optical: a safety sensor fogged or frosted reverses the door on every attempt to close, then clears itself once the sun is on the lens, so the fault is gone by mid-morning. None of that needs a new door, only garage door repair.
Two shifts in one driveway
A door on a nine-to-five house opens twice on a working day. A door on a house where one driver goes at 5:15 and the other at three in the afternoon opens four times, and more again on a rota week. A spring does not count the years, it counts the openings, and it spends them at whatever rate the driveway sets. So two identical builder pairs on two identical 2018 houses two streets apart are not the same age in any way that matters, and the one on the shift-work drive gets to the end first. That bites hardest on the newest streets. Woodstock put up 1,855 homes between 2016 and 2021 and 3,135 since 2011, against 2,245 across the whole of 2001 to 2010, and the 2016 to 2021 block is arriving at its first spring failure now.
The opener over a bedroom at 5:15
An opener that runs at half past eight is a different purchase from the same opener at 5:15 with the rest of the house still asleep behind the wall. On a shift-work driveway a belt drive buys quiet at the hour it is worth having. A battery backup matters because a cut before dawn otherwise means lifting a double by hand in the dark with nobody up to help. An outside keypad matters because a remote that dies at the plant gate strands somebody at the end of a shift. Where the head unit itself is sound, a gear kit, a logic board or a travel adjustment is the whole job, so opener repair is the first question. Where it is not, a new unit hangs above the door already there, which is installation rather than repair.
The old grid, and the streets that came after it
Half of Woodstock is older than 1981: 9,515 homes of 18,886, and 5,260 of those date from 1960 or before. Most stand in the old grid around Dundas Street, where the Town Hall and Market House has faced the street since 1853. Garages on those lots arrived later, usually single, framed to whatever width the lot had left. Those openings are often a size no catalogue lists, so the width is measured before a model is chosen, and the door range and the Garaga designer come after the tape. The newest streets are the opposite problem: attached doubles on the builder's lightest steel, in a city that is 57.5% single-detached. Once a bottom section has rusted through or a panel has split at the stile, hardware will not bring it back and replacement is the straight answer.
Permits, and what the City's own sheet leaves out
Building permits here come from the City of Woodstock rather than the County of Oxford, through Cloudpermit. The City's sheet is clear on new construction: anything over 10 square metres of floor area needs a permit, and attached garages, detached garages, carports and sheds are all named under residential additions. Under alterations it counts adding windows and doors as a structural change. What the sheet does not carry, where several municipalities nearby carry it plainly, is an exemption for a door hung in the opening that is already there. It does not require a permit for one either. It is silent, so ask the City's building department about the address before ordering if the opening is changing.
Woodstock is about 44 km east of London in a straight line, and the work here is sent from the London branch along the 401. There is no Woodstock premises to walk into, so everything starts on the form, and on streets that empty before seven the useful thing to write on it is the shift. Give the street, what the door is doing and the hours somebody is at the house, on the contact form or by email to info@protechgarage.ca.

The door would not lift at half past five this morning. What is stuck?
Usually the bottom edge, not the opener. Woodstock thaws in the afternoon and freezes again after dark on roughly ninety days a year, and the January daily minimum is -9.6 C, so meltwater runs under the bottom seal and sets to the slab overnight. The opener then pulls against a door that is held down, and it strips a gear or stretches a cable instead of lifting. The other candidate at that hour is the photo eye: fogged or frosted, it reverses the door on every attempt to close, then clears itself once the sun is on the lens.
Two of us work opposite shifts. Does that wear the door out faster?
Faster than the neighbours, yes. A nine-to-five house runs its door twice a working day; a house on opposite shifts runs it four times, and more again on a rota week. A spring is rated in openings rather than in years, so it is the driveway pattern and not the build date that decides when it goes, and two identical builder pairs on identical 2018 houses two streets apart can be years apart in wear. On a double, have both springs done together, because the second has taken the same count as the one that broke.
Do I need a permit for a new door in the opening that is already there?
The City of Woodstock issues the permits, through Cloudpermit, and its published list does not settle that question either way. It names attached garages, detached garages, carports and sheds under residential additions, and it treats adding windows and doors as a structural alteration. Unlike several municipalities nearby, it prints no exemption for a replacement at the existing size, and it also stops short of requiring one. Ask the City's building department about your address before ordering, and say whether the opening itself is changing.
Why should the form say which shift I work?
Because it decides when anybody can be at the house. Woodstock sends 35.8% of its workforce out before seven, and another 20.2% leave between noon and five in the morning, so the person who owns the broken door is often gone before dawn or asleep in the middle of the day. Put the shift next to the street and the fault, on the form or in an email to info@protechgarage.ca, and the reply can be pitched at hours somebody is home rather than at an empty driveway.
