London's houses by decade, and the door on each
Statistics Canada counted 174,655 occupied dwellings in London in 2021, and 52,265 of them went up between 1961 and 1980, the largest block. London annexed Byron, Masonville and the rest of its ring in 1961, more than doubling its area, and built outward: Westmount, Oakridge, Whitehills, Pond Mills, White Oaks and Stoneybrook. Sifton had already opened Oakridge Acres in 1950, 1,649 units on 74 acres, and Oakridge Park followed in the early 1960s. A door hung on one of those houses in 1970 has had fifty-six winters. When it goes, the choice is a residential door that reads correctly on that elevation.
The 39,135 dwellings from 1960 or before are a different job. Wortley Village and Old South had recognisable streetscapes by 1915 and their built form before the Second World War, and the 199 houses of the Bishop Hellmuth district north of Oxford Street are brick Queen Anne Revival from 1895 to 1910. A garage behind one of those was added to a lot laid out before the car: the opening is narrow, the headroom is short, and many are detached buildings on their own slab. The opening decides the door before the catalogue does, and the garage doors page starts there.
London nearly doubled its area again in 1993 by annexing almost all of Westminster Township, and the census counts 39,985 dwellings built since 2001. On those streets the purchase is more often an opener than a door.
Openers for a London garage
The drive types and the features are on the openers page. What London adds is the building the opener goes in. In the 1961 to 1980 stock the garage is attached and usually beside or under a bedroom, so the quiet option is the one that matters. Behind the pre-war streets the garage is detached, has no bedroom over it and often no headroom for a rail, which puts a wall-mount unit in play if the door runs on a torsion spring.
Winter, measured against Toronto's
London sits about 60 km downwind of Lake Huron, and part of its snow arrives as lake-effect squalls. The 1991 to 2020 Environment Canada normals for the London airport station put 190 cm of snowfall in the six months from November to April, 52 cm of it in January. Toronto Pearson's normal for the whole year is 114.5 cm. The opener works a door that stands in a drift for more of the season, and a door chosen for its face rather than its stiffness pays for it at the top section, the strut question on the openers page.
Overhead doors in London, Ontario
In the trade a sectional door on a commercial or farm building is an overhead door, and London's are on the east side. The City's own industrial land runs along Veterans Memorial Parkway: Innovation Park north of the 401 on both sides of the parkway, and Skyway Industrial Park between the parkway and Crumlin Side Road. Maple Leaf Foods opened a 660,000 square foot poultry plant at 1577 Wilton Grove Road in November 2022, and General Dynamics Land Systems employs more than 2,400 people in the city.
Outside the city limits it is farm country. Middlesex County's economic development office counts 2,352 farms on 246,592 hectares, with cattle, pork, poultry and egg operations alongside the cropland. A machine-shed door is a sectional overhead door sized for the equipment that passes under it, on a building nobody heats, and a farm shop door takes a jackshaft operator so the ceiling stays clear for the hoist. The London branch supplies and services commercial overhead doors and the operators that drive them for both.
Repair or replace, and what it costs
A single-skin door from the 1970s in Westmount, an opener that hums on a 1960s house in Oakridge Park, and a laneway door in Old South that no longer clears the car are three different bills. Replace when the bottom section has rusted through from wet snow sitting against it all winter, or the door has been hit. Repair when the sections are sound and the failure is a spring, a cable or the opener: repairs are booked same day.
Ask the London branch
Send the contact form with the street, the door width, whether the garage is attached and what the door or the opener is doing, or email info@protechgarage.ca. A new door or opener is quoted from a measurement of the opening, a repair from the description.
