Statistics Canada counted 174,655 occupied dwellings in London in 2021, and 52,265 of them went up between 1961 and 1980, the largest block. London annexed Byron, Masonville and the rest of its ring in 1961, more than doubling its area, and built outward: Westmount, Oakridge, Whitehills, Pond Mills, White Oaks and Stoneybrook. Sifton had already opened Oakridge Acres in 1950, 1,649 units on 74 acres, and Oakridge Park followed in the early 1960s. A door hung on one of those houses in 1970 has had fifty-six winters. The 39,135 dwellings from 1960 or before are a different job. Wortley Village and Old South had recognisable streetscapes by 1915 and their built form before the Second World War, and the 199 houses of the Bishop Hellmuth district north of Oxford Street are brick Queen Anne Revival from 1895 to 1910. A garage behind one of those was added to a lot laid out before the car: the opening is narrow, the headroom is short, and many are detached buildings on their own slab. London nearly doubled its area again in 1993 by annexing almost all of Westminster Township, and the census counts 39,985 dwellings built since 2001. On those streets the purchase is more often an opener than a door.

Behind the pre-war streets the garage is detached, has no bedroom over it and often no headroom for a rail, which puts a wall-mount unit in play if the door runs on a torsion spring.

Two-tone: a dark body under light overlays laid out as a crossbuck, with strap hinges and handles. The contrast is the whole effect, so it sits best on a house whose trim is already a different colour from its siding.

A long-panel face in a woodgrain finish instead of a raised-panel grid. It reads as timber from the street and needs none of the refinishing real timber needs. It comes in two insulation levels, which is the decision to make before the colour.

Wide horizontal sections with the glass set to one side rather than across a full top row. The offset window is what stops a large dark door reading as a blank slab, and it suits a flat-roofed or dark-brick front.

The face is flat and unbroken from jamb to jamb. It is the least forgiving door here: nothing on it hides a dent, and a track that is even slightly out of true shows along the top edge.
California · Contemporary
An aluminium frame carrying glass, clear or sandblasted or tinted. It is the one door here that lights the garage from outside. Garaga says the trade plainly on its own page: a full vision door should not be chosen for its insulation.
G-5000
The standard bay door: polyurethane injected between two steel skins, a grooved face, one and three quarter inches thick. Thinner and thicker builds exist at R-12 and R-18, and choosing between them is a question about whether the building is heated.
G-4400
An aluminium frame glazed across the whole face, for a showroom or a service bay the street should be able to see into. It is not insulated, and the glass is chosen per opening from more than twenty types, tempered or not.
