Less snow than London, and a lot more wind

Environment and Climate Change Canada measures this city at Sarnia Airport, inside the municipal boundary. On the 1981-2010 normals the snow is the smaller number here: 112 cm a year against London's 194, 41 days with 0.2 cm or more against 60, and about four days of blowing snow against twelve. The wind runs the other way. Sarnia averages 16.2 km/h of hourly wind over the year against London's 14.1, and records 127 days with at least one hourly reading over 30 km/h against London's 84, 43 days over 40 km/h against 23, and 9.5 days over 50 km/h against 3.9. The last two are 1.9 and 2.4 times the London figure, and both sit above Windsor's 32 and 6.9. Each is a count of days on which one hourly reading passed that speed; the gusts inside them run higher.

There is no sheltered quarter on this shore

A garage door is the widest unsupported panel on most houses, a flat sheet with nothing behind it, and wind is the one load that arrives across its whole face rather than at a single hinge. Sarnia has no sheltered side: Lake Huron to the north, the St. Clair River and the Michigan shore to the west, the flat river corridor to the south. The normals put the most frequent wind at 180 degrees over the year and at 270 degrees in December and January.

So the failures here are sideways ones rather than frost ones. A top section bowed inward. Hinges and rollers worked loose in their screws. A track no longer plumb, so the door binds at the same point every cycle. A door caught halfway up on an open driveway that jumps the track and stays there, which is off-track work and not something to force by hand. Where a cable has come off its drum with it, that is spring and cable work too. What an exposed lot asks for is bracing rather than more insulation: struts across the sections, heavier hinges, and a track set plumb and anchored solidly. Say on the form if a section already carries a bow, since that decides whether the repair is a strut or a section. An opener straining on a door that binds is reporting the track rather than itself, so opener repair comes after the door runs true.

Polymer, 1942, and a city that had mostly finished building by 1980

Parks Canada records the founding of Polymer Corporation here in 1942, after the Allies lost their main source of natural rubber, as a national historic event, and the City calls it the first step in becoming a petrochemical centre. The housing followed the plants and then stayed put. The 2021 Census counts 72,047 people, up 0.6% on 2016, in 32,190 occupied dwellings, of which 11,555 date from 1960 or before and 22,855, 71% of the city, were standing by 1980. Only 695 have gone up in the five years to 2021, and two thirds of the stock is single-detached.

So almost nothing here is a new opening. The job is a repair, or a new door fitted to a rough opening framed before the attached two-car double was standard. On a house from the 1961 to 1980 block, 11,300 dwellings on its own, the thing to settle first is whether the track and the hinges are as old as the opening they hang in. The door designer puts a panel and a colour on screen before anything is ordered, and a replacement on an exposed lot is worth specifying with the bracing in it from the start.

Overhead doors on the refining complex

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership describes the local complex as three refineries and more than thirty-five interrelated chemical facilities, Canada's second-largest cluster in the sector, in a region it calls the birthplace of the country's petrochemical industry after oil was found at Oil Springs in 1857. Plant buildings, tank farms, contractor yards and distribution units at that scale run their commercial doors and commercial openers to a shift and shutdown calendar rather than to a household's day. What helps on a plant or yard enquiry is the size of the door, how many bays, and when it can be off service.

The shoreline the city took in 1991

Sarnia left Lambton's two-tier system in 1914, and Bill 35, passed on 1989-07-13, set up its amalgamation with the Town of Clearwater, the former Sarnia Township. The merged city arrived on 1991-01-01. That is why its 163.9 square kilometres run out along the Lake Huron shore to the northeast rather than stopping at the old town line, and why the exposed lakeshore streets sit inside the city at all.

Two authorities can have a say about a garage here. The City publishes one threshold, an accessory building such as a garage over 10 square metres needing a building permit, with a storage-only shed up to 15 square metres exempt where it is single storey, unattached and unplumbed. Along the water the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority administers Ontario Regulation 41/24, and on Lake Huron and the St. Clair River its regulated limit is the 100-year flood level plus wave uprush, so the wind that loads the door is the wind that fixes that line. A door going back into an opening that already exists is not development and is nothing to the Authority. Repair, replace, and the direction the driveway opens to

A door with sound sections and one bowed top panel is a bracing job. The same door with a split section, a rusted bottom rail, or a track racked and straightened more than once is a replacement, and fresh springs on it first buy nothing.
