Springs wear by the count

A spring is rated in cycles, and DASMA, the door manufacturers' association, defines one as a door moving from closed to fully open and back to closed. What shortens a spring

Paint or components added to a door can push it past what the springs were specified for, and an insulation kit glued to an old single-skin door is one such addition. Rust thins the wire and leaves pits where fatigue cracks start. And springs last longer lubricated as the door maker's instructions set out.

None of that is a repair to a spring. It is how the new pair outlasts the pair that broke.

The balance check, and where it ends

An opener maker's support pages describe a balance test that stays on the safe side of the line. With the door closed, disconnect it from the opener with the release, then lift it by hand 3 to 4 feet off the floor and let go. A balanced door stays where it is, supported by its springs, or drifts slowly. A door that slams shut or shoots upward is out of balance. The same pages say no one should loosen, move or adjust the springs, cables or pulleys, all of them under extreme tension. A spring that goes before 7 a.m.
