What the census counts here, and what it misses

Westport is its own village inside Rideau Lakes Township, 2.19 square kilometres, with 634 people in 2021, up from 590 in 2016, and 335 occupied homes, 215 of them single-detached. 190 of those homes, 56.7%, were built in 1960 or earlier and 80 more between 1961 and 1980. The whole of 2001 to 2021 added about 35. That is the year-round village.

The census counts homes with a usual resident, so the cottages on the lake sit largely outside those numbers, and they are much of what a garage door company sees around Westport. A cottage garage is opened in May and shut in October, and the door that sat closed through a winter is the one that gets the call on the first weekend of the season: a spring that let go while nobody was there, a bottom seal gone hard, a remote that no longer pairs. A door that runs a few dozen times a year ages by the calendar rather than the cycle.

The lake, the water level and the boathouse door

Upper Rideau Lake sits at 124 metres, the summit of the Rideau Canal, and Parks Canada manages its level for navigation: highest in late May, falling through the summer to a low in October, a range of about a metre. The canal opens on 15 May and closes on 12 October in 2026, and the lockstations at Narrows and Newboro on either side of the lake are closed and unmaintained through the winter.

Every structure on, over or under the bed of the lake is Parks Canada's: docks, boathouses, boatports, boatlifts, marine railways. The rule covers repair, replacement, relocation and removal of an existing structure as well as new work, and a door on a boathouse that stands over the water is part of that structure. The permit for touching the boathouse is the owner's and comes from Parks Canada first; the door is fitted after. On land, building permits for Westport are issued by Rideau Lakes Township, which exempts an accessory building of 10 square metres or less and a shed of 15 square metres or less, and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, which runs Foley Mountain above the village, regulates shoreline and floodplain building under Ontario Regulation 41/24.

A hundred kilometres, and the honest version of a visit

From Nepean the road runs through Perth: County Road 10 through Franktown to Perth, then the Perth Road, still County Road 10, south to Westport. About 100 km. Protech has no premises in Westport or anywhere nearer than Nepean. Same day is an Ottawa promise; at 100 km it is not made. What a Westport call gets is a booked visit with the parts for the job on the truck, which means the call has to carry more than a symptom: the door size, single or double, wood or steel, the spring arrangement above it if you can see it, the opener brand, and a photograph to info@protechgarage.ca if the door is on a cottage you are not standing in front of. A van that arrives with the right spring pair for a 9-by-7 single closes the job in one visit. A van that arrives to look is two visits and two hundred kilometres.

Doors for cottages, and doors for the village

The door that suits a cottage garage is the one that can be ignored for six months: steel, with a seal that will still be soft in May and hardware that does not mind the damp off the lake. On the village's older houses the garage is a later addition on a small lot, and the opening decides the door. Repair or replace on a seasonal property

The sums on a cottage door differ from a house door's. A house door runs its cycles and wears its spring; a cottage door runs a fraction of them and rusts or rots instead, so the failure is the bottom section and the seal more often than the spring. Replace it when the sections are gone. Keep it and fix the spring, the opener or the cable while they are sound, and time the visit for opening weekend so the door is checked when it is first run rather than found in August.
