Seventy kilometres, and the road ends in the town

One road does this run. Bank Street out of the city becomes County Road 31 and stays that for 36 km, crossing Highway 401 a few kilometres north of the town and finishing near Highway 2, about 800 metres from the water. Until 1998 the whole of it was Highway 31, a provincial route that started here and ended in Ottawa. About 70 km by road, and no minutes are quoted, because a two-lane county road in a January crosswind is not the road a routing engine describes.

The year the town moved

Morrisburg was settled in the 1840s, incorporated as a village in 1860, and had the Grand Trunk Railway through it from 1855. Then the St. Lawrence Seaway took the riverbank. Building the seaway meant flooding 20,000 acres of Canadian shoreline between Iroquois and Cornwall; between 1955 and 1957 about 6,500 people were moved, and on 1958-07-01 a controlled explosion opened a cofferdam at eight in the morning and the water took four days to arrive.

Morrisburg did not go under. Part of it was rebuilt on higher ground: more than 80 houses were physically moved, the whole downtown business district was demolished and rebuilt as a shopping plaza, and the Canadian National line was shifted 1.1 km north, with much of the old railbed going into the reconstruction of Highway 2.

Why "1960 or before" means something different here

The 2021 Census counts 4,650 occupied private dwellings in the Municipality of South Dundas. The largest single band is the oldest: 1,830 of them were standing in 1960. Another 1,125 went up between 1961 and 1980, 545 in the 1980s and 530 in the 1990s. Only 620 date from 2001 or later and 90 of those from 2016 onward. The municipality held 10,852 people in 2016 and 11,044 in 2021, and Morrisburg itself 2,398.

Read that oldest band carefully, because here it does not mean what it means elsewhere. A 1957 relocation house and an 1880s farmhouse both count as "1960 or before", and they are nothing alike above a garage opening. The relocation put a burst of mid-1950s building into a town whose other old houses are Victorian, so two neighbours in the same census band can need a different track and a different door width. Nobody can tell which is which from a postcode. The replacement page says what gets measured.

Upper Canada Village, open since 1961

Buildings pulled out of the flood zone were reassembled east of the town and opened to the public in 1961 as Upper Canada Village, run by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. A site of that kind runs workshops, barns, stores and service buildings, and the openings in them are not standard residential sizes. What South Dundas counts as an alteration

The Municipality is unusually plain about this. A building permit is required for the construction or alteration of any structure over 10 square metres, which it gives as 108 square feet, and for a detached shed the no-permit limit rises to 14.8 square metres, or 160 square feet. Its own list of work needing a permit names structural alterations and gives larger windows and doors as the example.

So the line falls in a useful place for anyone thinking about a door. Hanging a new door in the opening that is already there is a replacement. Making that opening wider or taller is a structural alteration by the Municipality's own wording, and it is a conversation with the building department before it is an order to a supplier.

Repair or replace in Morrisburg

Replace when the bottom section has rusted through along the seam, when a wooden rail has softened where it meets the slab, or when the door is a single skin of steel on a garage that shares a wall with a bedroom.
