The garrison sets the calendar

The Department of Militia and Defence bought the land in 1905, and the garrison is now home to 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, with about 6,000 Canadian Forces personnel and 1,000 civilian employees in March 2022, 465 buildings, and a training area of more than 300 square kilometres. The town that grew beside it had 18,160 people in 2021, up 5.7% from 17,187, with an average age of 34.1 and a median household income of $102,000. By the same census it is the youngest and the best-paid of the seven valley municipalities Protech covers.

The housing is younger too. Of 6,760 occupied dwellings, 1,920 were built between 2001 and 2021, and 2,005 between 1961 and 1980. 2,420 households rent. A door here is more often a builder door on a first set of springs than a fifty-year-old door on its third.

Postings, and a door with no history

Military families move on posting, and the houses off the base change hands in a season. The buyer inherits a door that nobody can describe: no receipt for the spring, no date on the opener, a remote that was in the kitchen drawer. The seller wants it working before the photographs are taken. Either way the technician reads the door on the day, and the first visit is the door's only record. Keep the invoice with the house papers; the next family will want it.

The houses inside the housing sites are the Canadian Forces Housing Agency's, which manages more than 11,700 residential housing units across Canada and has more than 1,000 new ones planned for Petawawa under the plan announced on 2026-02-24. The Agency's occupant handbook says damage and repairs are reported to the local Housing Services Centre or through its repair request form, and that the Agency maintains the premises. Getting through the gate

Garrison Petawawa began phasing in new security rules on 2026-04-13. Visitors, including contractors and delivery drivers, need pre-authorisation or on-site vetting. Anyone without an arrangement applies for a day pass at the Main Gate guard house and surrenders a photo ID until the pass is handed back. The Montgomery, McCurdy and Frederick gates open from 06:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, the Frederick main gate stays open around the clock, and at least two Commissionaires staff each gate, with the authority to deny entry. That is from the garrison's public affairs officer, reported in June 2026. So if the door is inside the gate, the pass comes before the van: tell the dispatcher who the sponsor is, and expect the sponsor to arrange it.

160 km up the valley

The 417 ends at Arnprior and Highway 17 carries the rest, two lanes through Renfrew and Cobden and past Pembroke. There is no Petawawa premises. At 160 km, same day is not promised. The dispatcher books a day, and the truck leaves Nepean carrying the spring, cable or gear kit for the door you described on the phone. Say whether the spring sits on a shaft above the opening or runs along the tracks, give the width in feet, and read the brand off the opener.

Colder than Ottawa, on the record

Environment Canada's normals for Petawawa Airport, 1991 to 2020, give January a mean of minus 11.9 and a daily minimum of minus 17.9, with 199 cm of snow a year and a record low of minus 41.1. Ottawa's city station reads minus 9.6, minus 14.0 and 184.5 cm over the same thirty years. Two degrees and fifteen centimetres do not change how a door works; they change how many mornings the door is asked to work at its stiffest.

Repair or replace on a Petawawa house

A builder door from the 2000s with one broken spring is a repair, and the second spring is replaced with it because it has the same cycles on it. A door that has been backed into, or a 1970s single-skin door on a garage that shares a wall with the house, is a replacement, and the Garaga designer shows it on the house before it is ordered.
