210 km past Kingston, said plainly

Napanee is the furthest town this branch drives to. The van passes every 401 exit from Johnstown to Kingston before it reaches yours. Protech does not quote a drive time at 20 km and will not at 210.

A town growing at both ends

Greater Napanee counted 16,879 people in 2021, up 6.2 per cent on 2016, and 320 of its 6,865 occupied dwellings were built between 2016 and 2021, with 285 more from 2011 to 2015. Those are the newest subdivisions on this stretch of the 401. They run the door and the opener the builder hung, and a door hung in 2012 is on its original springs unless somebody has changed them; the first spring failure on a door of that age is an ordinary call.

At the other end, 2,415 dwellings were built in 1960 or earlier and 1,995 from 1961 to 1980. The old town grew at the falls on the Napanee River, where Robert Clark's grist mill gave the place its first name, Clarksville, and it incorporated in 1854. The municipality as it stands was formed on 1998-01-01 from the Town of Napanee and the townships of Adolphustown, North Fredericksburg, South Fredericksburg and Richmond, which is why a Napanee address can be a farm at Hay Bay a long way from Dundas Street.

Goodyear, and two generating stations

The Goodyear tire plant, opened in 1988, is the town's largest employer. On the Lake Ontario shore at the south end of the municipality sit the Lennox Generating Station, Ontario Power Generation's 2,140 MW gas-and-oil peaking plant commissioned in 1976, and beside it the 900 MW Napanee Generating Station, in service since 2020. Highway 401 and Highway 41 cross at the town.

Plants like those, and the warehouses and truck shops that grow up beside a 401 interchange, run overhead doors that stand open on a loading dock and get bumped by a forklift. Permits in Greater Napanee

The Town lists building a garage among the projects that need a building permit, and exempts only a shed of not more than 15 square metres, one storey, detached, storage-only and without plumbing. A new door in an existing opening is not a permit; a wider opening on a detached garage is a question to ask the Town before the door is ordered.

The freezing rain of 1998-01-04 to 1998-01-10 fell on the St. Lawrence Valley from Kingston eastward, up to 100 mm of it, and the accounts of it begin at Kingston, 40 km east of Napanee. What is different at 210 km is that the winter tune-up has to be booked, because nobody drives out to Napanee for a lubrication on the way past.

Repair or replace, in Napanee terms

Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together. A spring pair and cables on a 2012 double in a new subdivision is a repair, and a small one. A door on a pre-1960 detached garage by the river with the bottom section rusted through is a replacement, and money spent on its spring is spent on a door that is leaving.
