Forty-five kilometres, and one road does nearly all of it

The van leaves Hunt Club, picks up Bank Street and stays on it for 27 km, and Bank Street becomes County Road 31 at the city line and runs to Main Street West. That road used to be a single provincial highway: Highway 31 ran from Morrisburg to Ottawa through Vernon and Greely, and it was downloaded to the counties and the city on 1998-01-01, with 35.7 km of it going to Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. About 45 km by road. No minutes are quoted here, because this is a two-lane road through open country and the difference between a clear afternoon and a blowing-snow morning on it is not small.

Repairs are booked same day. Winchester sits close enough that a morning call and an afternoon visit is an ordinary shape for the day. Say the street, and say whether the building is a house, a shop or a farm building, because those are three different truckloads of parts.

The largest cheese plant in Canada is at the edge of the village

Lactalis Canada runs the Winchester plant, which the company calls the largest cheese plant in Canada by volume, employing more than 300 people and making Balderson, Black Diamond and Cracker Barrel cheese along with Lactantia and President butter. Cheesemaking has been on that site since the late 1800s. In April 2026 Lactalis opened a $16.4 million milk receiving bay there, part of a $42 million investment in the site that year, lifting the plant to as much as two million litres of milk a day, an increase of roughly a quarter. North Dundas approved another 157.5 cubic metres of water a day for it, and the company is paying the township close to $1.7 million for that allocation.

Two million litres a day arrives by road tanker, around the clock. A receiving-bay door in a plant like that opens and shuts more often in a week than a house door does in a year, on a schedule with no gap in it for a repair. That is the case for a booked service visit rather than a call after the fact. A hospital that opened with thirty-two beds

Winchester District Memorial Hospital opened on 1948-12-08, a two-storey building with 32 beds, and it still serves the district around the village rather than a city. It is the other twenty-four-hour building in town, and its ambulance and service entrances are doors nobody can schedule around either.

Fifty-seven per cent of the township was standing before 1981

The 2021 Census counts 4,540 occupied private dwellings in the Township of North Dundas. Of those, 1,455 were built in 1960 or before and 1,125 between 1961 and 1980, so about fifty-seven in every hundred predate 1981. Another 690 went up in the 1980s and 445 in the 1990s. Just 820 date from 2001 or later. The township held 11,278 people in 2016 and 11,304 in 2021, which is as close to flat as a five-year census gap gets.

A township that has not grown in waves does not have doors that fail in waves. On a street in a subdivision that went up in one season, one house's springs predict the next house's. Repair or replace, and the permit question

A cable set or a gear kit is a small job. A spring pair is bigger and still costs a fraction of a door. Replace when the bottom section has rusted through along the seam, when a wooden rail has gone soft on the slab, or when a single-skin steel door is the reason the room over the garage is cold in February. On permits, North Dundas does not print a plain size threshold on its building page. It points at By-law 2023-29 and a set of application checklists and gives a number for its building staff. A door hung in the opening that is already there is not new construction. A wider opening, a raised header or a new building is a question for the Township, asked before the door is ordered.
