Protech Garage Doors repairs garage doors and openers in Almonte, the town at the centre of Mississippi Mills, from the stone streets beside the falls to the new houses at Mill Run and White Tail Ridge. The van comes from 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean, about 50 km by road, out the 417 and along March Road. The line is open 24 hours: (613) 845-9950. Almonte here means the town itself. The rural municipality around it, Pakenham, Clayton, Appleton and the concession roads, is a different drive and a different kind of door, and it has its own page under Mississippi Mills.
Almonte is the town. Mississippi Mills is the municipality.
Almonte stopped being a municipality on 1 January 1998, when it merged with Ramsay and Pakenham townships to form Mississippi Mills. It is still the town. The 2021 Census counts 6,098 people in the Almonte population centre against 14,740 in the whole municipality, so a little over two in five Mississippi Mills residents live in town and the rest are spread across 511 square kilometres of farms, villages and country lots. A call from Pakenham or Clayton is not an Almonte call, and the page for the municipality says why.
The mills, and the garages that came after them
Almonte was a woollen town. David Shepherd took up 200 acres at the falls in 1818 to run a mill, there were seven woollen mills by 1850, and the Rosamond mill on Coleman Island, begun in 1866, was one of the largest in the country for forty years. It was named a National Historic Site in 1986, converted to condominiums from 1987, and its office block opened as the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in 1991. The last textile mill closed in the early 1980s.
The houses that go with that history are the largest block in town: of 2,755 occupied homes in the population centre, 915, a third, were built in 1960 or earlier, most of them when the mills were the employer. Their garages came later. A garage on one of those lots was squeezed into a side yard or converted from an outbuilding at the back, and its door was made to fit whatever opening the builder had. That is the Almonte call that takes longest to close. The opening is rarely a stock size, so the replacement door is a factory order in that width and height rather than something on the truck. Measure the opening before you call, and ask what the lead time is on a door in that size. A spring, a cable or an opener on the same door is stock and is fitted on the visit.
The commuter streets on the other side of town
The other big block is the newest. Between 2016 and 2021 the population centre added 360 homes, 13% of its stock, and 2006 to 2015 added another 515. Mill Run is planned for 501 units, White Tail Ridge for 175 lots over three phases, Riverfront Estates is in its third of five phases, and the municipality's official plan sends 70% of future growth into Almonte on full services. Those houses have attached doubles on standard openings and the opener the builder chose. The repair on them is the ordinary one: stock parts, standard sizes, one visit.
What Protech does in Almonte
Garage door repair and spring repair on both kinds of house. Garage door replacement where the sections are gone, including doors made to a non-standard opening, from the residential range of Garaga, Amarr and Stanley. Openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie. A door for an odd opening can be drawn on the Garaga designer before the visit.
Getting a van to Almonte
About 50 km by road from 46 Grenfell Crescent in Nepean: Hunt Club to the 417, the 417 to March Road, and March Road through to the edge of town. There is no Almonte premises, and none is invented here. Repairs are booked same day, and at 50 km that means a window in the day rather than the next hour. The street matters less than it does in Ottawa, because the town is small; the door size matters more, for the reason above.
Repair or replace
A 1950s door on a converted outbuilding behind a mill-era house is often the last original thing on the lot. A spring on it is a small bill; a door in that opening is a special order and a bigger one. On a 2019 double at Mill Run the arithmetic runs the other way: nothing about the door is worth replacing, and the part is the whole bill. Ask for the repair figure and the replacement figure together.

My garage opening is not a standard size. How long is a new door?
A door made to a width or height that is not stock is a factory order rather than something on the van, and that is the usual case on the mill-era streets where the garage was squeezed into a side yard or converted from an outbuilding. Measure the opening before you ring (613) 845-9950 and ask for the lead time on that size. A spring, a cable or an opener for the same door is stock and goes on during the visit.
I am out at Pakenham or Clayton. Is this the right page?
No. Almonte is the town and Mississippi Mills is the municipality around it, 511 square kilometres of farms, villages and country lots, and only about two in five residents live in town. The concession roads are a different drive and usually a different kind of door, so use the Mississippi Mills page for those addresses. Either way the number is the same.
The house is only a few years old and the spring went. Is that early?
It is on schedule. The Almonte population centre added 515 homes between 2006 and 2015 and another 360 between 2016 and 2021, so the first wave of builder springs is reaching the end of its cycle count now. Have both springs and the cables looked at together: they have run the same number of openings, and a cable that goes a month later is a second visit for the same door.
