Fifty-five kilometres, and the last sixteen go through Kemptville

The van takes Prince of Wales Drive to Highway 416, comes off at County Road 43, and drives 16 km west through Kemptville to Main Street East. About 55 km by road. That last stretch is a two-lane county road, and it is the part of the run that changes in February. No minutes are quoted here for that reason.

Three hundred houses in the whole municipality postdate 2001

The 2021 Census counts 1,290 occupied private dwellings across Merrickville-Wolford, which took its present shape on 1998-01-01 when the village and the Township of Wolford amalgamated. Of those, 455 were standing in 1960 and 225 more went up between 1961 and 1980. Only 300 date from 2001 or later, and 110 of those from 2016 onward. The population was 3,067 in 2016 and 3,135 in 2021.

So the ordinary suburban call barely exists here. There is almost no stock of builder-grade doors hung on original springs in a subdivision that went up all at once, which is the single most common job in Ottawa. What there is instead is a garage somebody added to an older house, on an opening framed for the car they had, carrying a door somebody chose. Two of those on the same street can need entirely different parts, which is why the measurement happens in the garage.

Designation here goes back to 1977

Merrickville has more designated heritage buildings than any other Ontario community of its size, by the Village's own account, and it keeps the reasons for designation on file along with a record titled History of Designation 1977 through 1990. Wikipedia counts more than 100 historic and heritage properties. Designation is property by property under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act rather than a blanket rule over a district, and a Heritage and Planning Advisory Committee advises Council on it.

What that means for a door is a sequence, not a ban. The by-law that designates a property names the heritage attributes it protects, and whether an outbuilding or a street elevation is among them is decided property by property. Where an alteration would affect a protected attribute, the owner needs written consent from Council, which runs on Council's calendar and not on a supplier's. The blockhouse, the locks and the buildings the mills left

William Merrick built his dam and mills here in 1794. Lieutenant-Colonel John By's Royal Engineers cut the Rideau Canal through between 1826 and 1832, and the blockhouse he put up in 1832 to guard the locks is a National Historic Site of Canada. The three locks lift boats a total of 25 feet. The canal is 202 km long, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, and Parks Canada runs it from May through October.

Industry outlasted the milling. A power company formed in the village in 1915 to supply the mills and a foundry, and the woollen mill worked until 1954. The stone and brick buildings that industry left are commercial premises now, and a service opening on one of them is a commercial door job with an old masonry jamb behind it. Repair or replace when the door faces the street

A cable set, a roller, a hinge or a gear kit is a small job on any door and does not change how a building looks. A spring pair is bigger and still does not. The decision gets harder only when the door itself is being replaced on a lot where the garage is visible from the road: then the choice of door and the permission to fit it are two questions, asked in that order. Replace when the bottom section has rusted through, when the wooden rail has gone soft along the slab, or when the panels no longer meet across the middle.
