Twice Pearson's snow

Barrie sits in the snowbelt off Georgian Bay, and most of its snow is lake-effect: bands that come in off the water and drop on the city while Toronto stays dry. Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for the Barrie WPCC station give 223.0 cm a year, 65.9 cm of it in January. Toronto Pearson's figure for the same period is 108.5 cm, and the downtown Toronto station's is 121.5. For a garage door that means the bottom section spends the winter with shovelled and blown snow packed against it, which is where a steel door rusts from the outside in, and the photo-eye lenses at the bottom of the tracks pick up spray and drift, which is why a door reverses on a clear morning for no reason anyone can see. A commuter city built between 1991 and 2005

Barrie had 62,728 people in 1991, 103,710 in 2001, 136,063 in 2011 and 147,829 in 2021. The 400 and the GO Barrie line made it a bedroom community for Toronto, and the houses show it: of 55,325 occupied dwellings in the 2021 census, 13,245 were built between 1991 and 2000 and 8,540 between 2001 and 2005, together 39% of the city, and 32,210 of the total are single-detached houses. Holly along Big Bay Point Road, Ardagh Bluffs and Painswick are those years. On 1 January 2010 the city annexed 2,293 hectares from Innisfil to the south and southeast for the next wave. A 1998 house in Holly has a two-car door on its second spring set and, often, its first opener, and that opener fails at six in the morning before the drive south. North of Barrie, the door is on a separate building

Highway 11 begins at the 400 on the north side of Barrie, and on a summer Friday the traffic north of the city builds from about three in the afternoon. Past that interchange the garage changes. A cottage-road lot, or a year-round house on one, keeps its garage as a separate building: unheated, on a slab that moves with the frost, with a single door hung by whoever built the shed. A door on a building like that racks with the building. When it drags on one side the track has moved, and a spring will not fix it. From Mississauga up the 400

The shop that drives to Barrie is 1495 Bonhill Road in Mississauga, about 90 km by road: the 401 east to the 400, then north. Barrie is the north end of that run and a 705 city served from the Mississauga branch. There is no Barrie premises. A planned job, an opener or a new door with a date on it, fits the drive.
