Three quarters of Milton is younger than the Big Pipe

Milton had 31,471 people in 2001 and 132,979 in 2021. The pipe that brought Lake Ontario water to the town was finished in 2002, and the fields south of the 401 filled in behind it: the population grew 71.4 percent between 2001 and 2006 and another 56.5 percent to 2011, and Milton was the fastest-growing municipality in Canada across those ten years. The 2021 Census counts 40,035 occupied private dwellings in the town, and 29,215 of them were built in 2001 or later. Only 2,165 date from 1960 or before.

So the doors in Milton are young, and they are all about the same age. That matters more than it sounds.

What a 2008 door is doing in 2026

A door hung in 2008 on a street off Derry Road has had eighteen winters of two commutes and a school run. Its first spring has gone or is going. The symptoms come in order: the door gets heavy, the opener slows and strains, the safety reversal trips more often, and then one morning there is a bang from the garage and the door will not lift. That is a spring repair, and the opener that has been dragging an unbalanced door for a year gets checked at the same visit. The 401 cuts Milton in two. South of it is the residential and commercial town. North of it is rural and industrial land up to the escarpment, Campbellville and the Mohawk racetrack. A call from north of the 401 is a machine shed, a detached workshop on a gravel lane, or a barn-style door taller than any subdivision double, and the opener has to be sized for it.

South of the 401 and east of James Snow Parkway, the Derry Green Business Park is about 800 hectares of logistics and manufacturing land that the Town expects to hold about 18,000 jobs when it is built out, with more than three million square feet already standing in 2023. The permit position in Milton

The Town of Milton's building permit page lists adding windows or doors among the projects that need a permit, and says nothing either way about replacing a door in the same opening. Enlarging the opening is a permit. For a like-for-like replacement, ask the Town's permit staff for that address before the door is ordered rather than assuming the answer from another municipality's list.

Getting a van from Mississauga

The shop is at 1495 Bonhill Rd #14 in Mississauga, about 25 km by road west on the 401 to James Snow Parkway. There is no Milton address. Repairs are booked same day. Give the street and which side of the 401 you are on; the residential south is a compact grid and the rural north is not, and the two get different windows.

Repair or replace, in Milton's terms

Most Milton doors are too young to replace. A first broken spring on a 2010 door is a spring. A builder's opener that has stripped its gear is a gear kit or a new opener, and on a door of that age the new opener is often the better spend because it is quieter and the old one was never good. Replace the door when a car has hit it, when the bottom section is rotting from road salt, or when the street's original doors are being swapped for insulated ones and the garage shares a wall with the house.
