The implement city, and the houses it built

Massey-Harris, Cockshutt Plow and Verity Plow made Brantford an industrial centre for the first half of the twentieth century. The implement makers set up here between the 1870s and the 1890s, and in the early 1900s Verity, Cockshutt and the Adams Wagon Company built larger factories on what became the Greenwich-Mohawk site. Eagle Place grew up as the workers' neighbourhood for those plants and was filled in later with Victory Housing, the government-built houses for wartime workers and returning soldiers put up from the 1940s to the 1960s. The census counts the result: 13,905 of Brantford's 41,675 occupied homes date from 1960 or earlier and another 12,285 from 1961 to 1980, so 63% of the city predates 1981. Then the plants closed. Massey Ferguson and White Farm Equipment shut their Brantford operations in the 1980s, and unemployment reached 22% by the end of 1981.

What a pre-1961 garage door in Brantford looks like

A house from the Cockshutt years was not built around a two-car garage. Its garage, where there is one, is a separate building at the back of the lot or a single added later, and its door is a single, sometimes wood, sometimes a size no catalogue lists.
