Every garage door company in this city advertises the size of its catalogue. Forty models, ten colours, a window layout for each. That is a true sentence and it is no help at all, because nobody buys forty doors. The useful work is subtraction, and three decisions do almost all of it before a model name is ever spoken.
They are, in order: one wide door or two narrow ones, whether the door carries windows, and what the face of it is meant to look like from the street. Settle those three and the catalogue collapses to a handful. Everything after that is a preference you can make in an afternoon, and Build Your Door will show it on a photograph before anyone quotes anything.
This is the Kanata question, because a great deal of the place was built with a two-car garage, and the opening is usually already framed for one wide door. Changing that is construction rather than a door order. But where the framing allows either, or where a builder left a centre post, the choice is real and it is not only about looks.
Garaga sets out three things to weigh, and the first is the one people do not think of until it happens. **If a sixteen foot door fails mechanically, both cars are shut in.** With two singles that is close to impossible: one of them will still open, and you drive to work. The second is heat. Opening a double lets considerably more cold air into the garage than opening a single, which matters where the garage is attached and something is heated above or beside it. The third is the elevation. A double door on the front of a house becomes the style of the house, and not everybody wants the garage to be the thing the street looks at.
Against that, one wide door is a single track, a single counterbalance and a single opener to maintain, and it is what most Kanata openings are already built for. There is no correct answer. There is an answer for your garage, and it usually falls out of the first consideration rather than the third.
Garaga puts it plainly: a garage door is often 30 to 40 per cent of a home's façade. These get treated as one choice and they are two. Garaga separates them: the grain is a texture pressed into the steel that imitates the feel of wood, and the colour is what imitates a wood species or simply reads as a colour. A door can have a deep grain and a flat modern colour, or a smooth face in a wood tone, and the two combinations look nothing alike on the same model.
Colour also comes unidirectional or bidirectional. A bidirectional finish varies in tone with orientation across the surface, which is what makes a steel door read as something more dynamic than a painted panel from the end of a driveway. It is genuinely hard to judge from a screen. Ask for the sample, hold it against the brick and the trim in daylight, and decide there.
One piece of local advice: Beaverbrook's streets are early 1960s and their houses are plainer than almost anything built in Kanata since. A flush or lightly grained face belongs on them. A heavy carriage-house crossbuck, which sits comfortably on a 2000s house in Bridlewood, reads as fancy dress on a Campeau-era bungalow.
