Garage door brands: how Garaga and Amarr compare

Who builds each door and where, and what the makers' own pages say about insulation, thickness and warranty. Compare the model, not the badge.

The garage door brands Protech Garage Doors sells and installs are Garaga, Amarr and Stanley. Within each brand the models run from a single steel skin to an insulated steel sandwich, so compare the model rather than the badge: its insulation core and R-value, the thickness of the door, and the warranty's terms.

The range we fit is on garage doors in Ottawa, with garage doors in Mississauga and garage doors in London for the other two branches. Everything below comes from each maker's own website, brochures and warranty documents, read on 2026-11-05.

What sets one garage door brand apart from another

Three things are fixed by the brand: who builds the door, where it is built, and whose warranty stands behind it. Everything else changes from model to model.

Stanley

Protech also supplies and fits Stanley doors. For a Stanley door, ask for the model's specification sheet at the measuring visit and hold it to the same five lines set out below.

Why the model matters more than the badge

Each maker sells a ladder of doors, and the rungs are further apart than the brands are. Garaga's residential model list:

  • Regal: 2-inch steel, non-insulated, with optional vinyl-backed polystyrene.
  • Acadia 138: 1 3/8-inch steel, polyurethane, R-12.
  • Standard+: 1 3/4-inch steel, polyurethane, R-16.
  • Princeton, Eastman and Cambridge: 2 3/8-inch steel with overlays, polyurethane, R-16.
  • H-Tech: 1 3/4-inch aluminium, polyurethane, R-16.

Amarr's collection pages and brochures:

  • Lincoln and Hillcrest: one, two or three layers, polystyrene, R-6.48 to 9.05.
  • Classica: the CL1000 is a single steel layer, the CL2000 adds polystyrene at R-6.64, and the CL3000 is polyurethane at R-13.35, all 2 inches thick.
  • Olympus and Designer's Choice: three layers, 1 3/8 or 2 inches of polyurethane, R-13.35 to 19.40.

So an Amarr Lincoln and an Amarr Olympus are further apart than an Amarr Olympus and a Garaga Standard+, which are both polyurethane doors.

Which rung a garage needs depends on what is next to it: a heated room, a bedroom above, or nothing at all. Insulated garage doors works through that against an Ottawa winter, and explains why an R-value is not the whole story.

How to compare garage door brands, line by line

Put two quotes side by side and read these five lines on each:

  1. The core: polyurethane or polystyrene, and two layers or three. Garaga says its injected polyurethane gives twice the thermal resistance of polystyrene.
  2. The R-value, and how it was found. Amarr's brochures say theirs is a calculated door-section figure under DASMA TDS-163, and print a whole-door U-factor beside it: 0.22 on the Classica CL3000.
  3. The thickness of the door: from 1 3/8 inches on Garaga's Acadia 138 to 2 3/8 inches on its Princeton, Eastman and Cambridge, and 2 inches on every Amarr Classica.
  4. The warranty: what it covers, for how long, and for whom. It differs more than the doors do, so it has its own section below.
  5. The hardware and springs. Garaga warrants its Dura+ hardware for two years and offers 20,000-cycle springs as an option.

What a cycle rating means in years at your own usage is in how long garage door springs last.

Steel, paint and wind

Neither Garaga's model list nor Amarr's collection pages give the gauge of the steel skin. Amarr describes heavy-gauge steel coated in a 5-layer paint system. Garaga's 25 reasons page names 14-gauge steel for its tracks, hinges and anchoring plates. Ask for the skin gauge in writing with the quote.

Amarr offers WindPro reinforcement on the collections above, built to meet a local code's wind load. Garaga's residential model list does not mention a wind option.

What each garage door warranty covers

A lifetime warranty means something different in each maker's document.

Garaga

Garaga's limited lifetime warranty, dated January 2026, covers its H-Tech, Top Tech, Townships, Standard+, Acadia 138 and Vantage doors against:

  • rust-through from cracking, checking or peeling of the paint in normal atmospheric conditions;
  • a section failing structurally because its foam insulation has delaminated;
  • cracking or rotting of the wood end blocks.

It is pro-rated after the first year: a lifetime counts as 30 years on the H-Tech and 25 on the other insulated doors. The Regal doors carry 15 years, Garaga's sealed glass 10 years against condensation, and Dura+ hardware two years.

It covers the original purchaser only and does not transfer. It does not apply to rental property, to multiple residences or to a condominium, and a door repainted by or for the owner falls outside it. A claim goes to Garaga in writing within 30 days of finding the defect.

The owner also commits to the annual maintenance Garaga recommends. Our garage door maintenance checklist sets out what that involves.

Amarr

Amarr prints its terms build by build. In the Classica brochure, the paint finish warranty is lifetime on all three builds. Workmanship and hardware run 3 years on the CL1000, 5 on the CL2000 and lifetime on the CL3000.

The Lincoln brochure is shorter: paint runs 15 years, 25 years or lifetime by build, and hardware 1 to 3 years.

Amarr adds two limits. Its brochures say any non-factory painting voids the paint finish warranty. Its warranty guidance says dealer labour and travel for a repair are not part of the product warranty.

Where the warranty decides it

Two buyers should read the terms before the brochure. A landlord buying for a rental house finds Garaga's terms exclude rental property. An owner who wants a custom colour finds that repainting takes a Garaga door outside its warranty and voids Amarr's paint finish cover, so it is worth choosing from the factory colours.

Which garage door brands does Protech install?

Protech Garage Doors sells, installs and repairs garage doors and openers. It is a Garaga dealer on Garaga's own dealer list, and it also supplies and fits Amarr and Stanley doors.

In Ottawa, the showroom at 46 Grenfell Crescent, Unit A, in Nepean is open Monday to Friday from 8 to 6 and Saturday from 9 to 2. Garaga's Build Your Door designer puts a model on a photo of your own house first. Then the opening is measured for garage door installation in Ottawa.

If the door you have is failing rather than being chosen, repair or replace your garage door sorts the faults that are parts from the ones that mean a new door.

Questions people ask

Short answers to what comes up most often.

Which garage door brand is better, Amarr or Garaga?

Neither, as a brand. Compare models at the same level: Garaga's Standard+ is 1 3/4 inches of polyurethane at R-16, and Amarr's Olympus is a three-layer polyurethane door at R-13.35 to 19.40. Then compare the warranties, which differ more than the doors do.

Who makes garage doors in Canada?

Garaga builds its doors in Canada, at Saint-Georges, Quebec since 1983 and at Barrie, Ontario since 1995. Amarr says all its products are made in the USA, and it sells through Door Centers in Canada as well as the US and Mexico.

Who owns Amarr?

ASSA ABLOY. Amarr's brochures say Amarr Company is owned by ASSA ABLOY. The company itself was founded in 1951 by Abe, Morris and Herb Brenner.

Which garage door is the most insulated?

Of the doors named here, Amarr's Olympus and Designer's Choice carry the highest published figure, R-19.40, and Garaga's insulated doors top out at R-16. Amarr states its figure is a calculated door-section value, so where a whole-door U-factor is printed, compare that too.
